Uzbekistan Appoints Fabio Cannavaro as Head Coach Ahead of World Cup Debut
In a surprising move, Uzbekistan appointed Italian football legend Fabio Cannavaro as their new head coach, despite already qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Prior to Cannavaro's appointment, the team was managed by Slovenian Tretzko Katanic until his resignation due to health issues in January 2025. Following Katanic's departure, Timur Kapadze, a highly celebrated former player for Uzbekistan, took over as interim head coach and led the team without a loss in eight matches. This marked the fourth time Kapadze had stepped in as the temporary leader for the team, known as the White Wolves.
Despite this, the Uzbekistan Football Association sought a more experienced coach in preparation for their first appearance at the World Cup, choosing Cannavaro, who captained Italy to the 2006 World Cup victory. Cannavaro, standing at 5 feet 9 inches, was renowned in the 2000s as a top central defender, achieving significant success with clubs like Parma, Juventus, and Real Madrid, and earning the 2006 World Cup Silver Ball and that year's Ballon d'Or.
Although Cannavaro's coaching career has been less illustrious compared to his playing days, it includes stints in Dubai, China, and Italy. His coaching journey began in Dubai and later moved to China, where he achieved promotion to the Chinese Super League with Tianjin Quanjian, and won the league with Guangzhou Evergrande in 2019. However, his roles have been fraught with challenges, including a brief overlapping position with the Chinese national team and economic troubles within the Chinese football scene that eventually led to his departure from Guangzhou in 2021.
Following his departure, Cannavaro's coaching career faced hurdles, with a short-lived role at Benevento in Italy's Serie B and brief periods with Udinezi and Dinamo Zagreb. The decision by Uzbekistan to appoint Cannavaro, therefore, appeared quite unexpected. As he prepares to lead the team in North America, the global football community will closely watch to see if he can translate his profound experience as a player into a successful coaching tenure. Success would vindicate Uzbekistan's decision, while failure could be deemed an unnecessary risk by the Central Asian nation.
Having been a defining figure in the 2006 World Cup, Cannavaro now has the opportunity to redefine his legacy, this time from the sidelines, at the same grand event.
