Novak Djokovic may not have been at his invincible best during the first round of the French Open on Tuesday night, but his 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory over Pierre-Hugues Herbert still showcased his resilience. Despite the win, the defending champion remains cautious about his prospects in this tournament.

“I don’t want to get too excited," Djokovic remarked. “I thought it was a solid performance. Of course, I could have done better on return games, but credit to him for serving very well and mixing things up."

Djokovic has had a challenging season so far, and while his match at Court Philippe Chatrier showed glimpses of breaking out of his 2024 slump, there is still room for improvement. Djokovic aims to make history by becoming the first player to win 25 Grand Slam singles titles. With three Roland Garros titles already to his name, Djokovic needs to reach the final to maintain his No. 1 ranking. However, he arrived in Paris without a single tournament win this year and an overall record of 15-6. Notably, he has lost all three semifinal matches he reached, including a recent defeat at the Geneva Open on red clay.

The Serbian superstar’s journey at Roland Garros continues with a second-round match against Roberto Carballes Baena. This clash is part of a jam-packed Thursday schedule, featuring six Top 10 players in the PIF ATP Rankings. Djokovic’s match is set to follow two WTA encounters that begin at 6 a.m. EST / 12 p.m. CEST on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The French Open schedule has been heavily impacted by steady rain over the past three days, causing delays and cancellations on the outside courts. On Wednesday, only a few matches were completed, all under the roofs of Philippe-Chatrier or Lenglen.

Despite the weather disruptions, Djokovic’s focus remains on the task ahead. As he navigates this Grand Slam, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he can find the form needed to achieve his historic goal. The road to the title is fraught with challenges, but Djokovic’s determination and experience make him a formidable contender.
