5. South Carolina Gamecocks
Are South Carolina fans willing to put up with back-to-back losing seasons? It appears we'll find out. South Carolina has lost a lot to the portal, and Spencer Rattler is headed to the NFL, but the schedule is demanding. They have road games against Alabama, Oklahoma, and Kentucky, plus a non-conference road trip to Clemson. They also host Missouri, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M.
1. Florida Gators
Billy Napier has his work cut out for him to stay employed in Gainesville. After a disappointing season and several portal defections, Florida's 2024 opponents had a combined record of 102-44 in 2023. The Gators begin the season against Miami and finish with Florida State. They have SEC road games against Tennessee and Texas and host LSU, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss. Add in the game against Georgia in Jacksonville, and getting to a bowl game would be an accomplishment.
2. Oklahoma Sooners
The Oklahoma Sooners' first schedule in the SEC is a doozy. The Sooners play Temple, Maine, Houston, and Tulane in non-conference play. That is not terribly difficult, but the conference slate is brutal. They have road games at Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, and LSU. They might not be favored in any of those games. The home games are Tennessee, South Carolina, and Alabama, while they play Texas in Dallas.
3. Vanderbilt Commodores
The Commodores were terrible in 2023, and the schedule for 2024 offers no room for optimism. They face Virginia Tech to open the season and have conference road games against Missouri, Kentucky, Auburn, and LSU. Vandy welcomes Alabama, Texas, South Carolina, and Tennessee to Nashville. Clark Lea could find himself on the hot seat.
4. Alabama Crimson Tide
Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide won't back down from anything but will have a tough road to face if they are to repeat as SEC Champions. The Tide get Western Kentucky, USF, and Mercer at home in non-conference play but also have an interesting trip north to face Wisconsin in Madison. That game is September 14, so it won't be cold yet, but that will be a challenging atmosphere in Camp Randall against transfer quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Alabama does get Vanderbilt and South Carolina, but they also have to play Georgia, Missouri, and Auburn at home and have trips to Tennessee, LSU, and Oklahoma.
