FanDuel Expanding Prediction Markets Across the US

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From NewsWire

FanDuel Expands Prediction Markets Across the U.S.

FanDuel, a prominent name in the gaming industry, has significantly expanded its prediction market services to include all 50 states, despite the controversies surrounding the similarity of these markets to sports betting. Initially launched in just five states on December 22nd, FanDuel Predicts has grown rapidly. However, their sport event contracts, central to ongoing legal challenges, are still restricted to 18 states where FanDuel does not hold sports betting licenses.

These developments come amid broader changes in the industry. With traditional sports betting not legally available in significant markets like California, Texas, and Florida, companies like FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics are seizing the opportunity to engage in prediction markets. This move allows them to operate in states that have not legalized sports betting, offering a service that, while not classified as traditional betting, closely mirrors its mechanics.

The expansion of these markets has raised concerns among state regulators. For instance, Arizona has already taken preliminary action against Underdog by issuing a notice of intent to revoke their daily fantasy sports license over their involvement in sport event contracts. This case is significant as other states, including Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Massachusetts, have also expressed concerns and are involved in lawsuits against companies operating these markets.

The future of these services and their compliance with state gambling laws remains uncertain. As more states vocalize their concerns and consider legal action, the industry faces potential challenges that could affect their licenses and the legal landscape of online betting and prediction markets in the U.S.
