But we'll start off with our first sports betting story of the day. We'll start off with the state of New York, where some changes could be coming in the tri-state area. Legislation recently put forward that would curtail in-play wagering, AKA micro betting on sporting events. There's already a bill being considered by the New Jersey State Assembly that would place a a prohibition on microbetting. What does it mean? It means for those of you who like to make in-game bets. That's probably OK, but based on some very individualized results, these could be eliminated. They're different than player props, they happen within the game. It's called microbetting. New Jersey legislation and New York could potentially move forward to ban these based on their information, and these could affect outcomes of how you could place bets on sports in the future. We'll see if that happens in the tri-state area and if that That leads to other states following, it could potentially remove some of the pitfalls involved like we saw with the Cleveland Guardians earlier this year. The Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, well, they had a game last night on Monday Night Football, if you could call it a game. The Pittsburgh Steelers absolutely dominated this one. They were up almost 4 touchdowns late, so the score doesn't really indicate what happened in this one. Pittsburgh dominated defensively Miami. Final score, 28 to 15. Aaron Rodgers threw 224 yards and 2 touchdowns. Miami could get nothing going until the final minutes of the game. So that keeps Pittsburgh alive and well in their chase for the AFC North. Here's Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers on staying in the race. Man, we love Monday Night Football. Um, mission accomplished. Um, certainly, we wanted to engineer victory, but we wanted to do it in a certain way. Um, That was a hot football team and they'd run, rode their run game over the last month or so. I think they had averaged 192 a game over the last five weeks. And, and so we needed to stop the run and certainly, we need to run the ball, uh, in the effort to flip that component of it. And I think that made the engineering of victory more fluid. But, uh, Kenny had a fantastic game, 1, 26 combined yards. Uh, Pat had some nice plays. Marquez had a touchdown. That was awesome. Asante Samuel, you know, had a, had a pick, Junior, I should add, because I played against his dad. So it's kind of what I said after the game. There's some castoffs if you look at our roster, which makes it really special. You know, Kenny Gamewell signed a next to nothing contract, um, you know, Connor Hayward, an afterthought, had a touchdown run. Um, you know, Marquez has been on a couple of teams. Adam Thielen got cut. Uh, Samuel was on the street for a long time, so it says a lot about the character of the guys we brought in. Dolphins eliminated, by the way, from playoff contention. Meanwhile, the Chiefs were eliminated on Sunday. Gardner Minho is gonna start the rest of the season for the Chiefs. Andy Reid met with the media yesterday as Patrick Mahomes had his ACL surgery. Reed gave an update as to what the future could hold for Mahomes. I think just what you said, he'll attack it, and he, uh, just like he does everything else, um, Uh, there've been pretty good quarterbacks that have had the same, same injuries and they've done pretty well after, after they came back. So, um, he'll, he'll get after it, and he's got good people here to rehab him and, uh, you know, he'll, again, he'll, he'll be right on top of all that. Yeah, I've had a good visit, uh, with him, uh, a couple of different times. So, um, He's, he's in a good place, you know, he, he always feels like he let people down, but then he, he comes back and he, he's ready for the challenge ahead, um, you know, which is what's real right now. He, he's just got to get, get through, uh, surgery, wherever it might be, and then, uh, and then move on from there. Another coach potentially on the hot seat with his team eliminated, that is Zach Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals could be the final season for him coaching in Cincinnati, that certainly remains to be seen, but he was asked that question at his press conference yesterday. That, that, that has no bearing on me whatsoever. Um, when I tell you there's a, a brick wall surrounding me and isolating me from any feelings people have about me or their views on me, I can't allow that to dictate how I operate. And so, um, Um, truthfully, I, I, that doesn't affect me in any way, shape or form, and I just keep doing my job to the best of my abilities. And, um, this year certainly hasn't been good enough with the record we're at right now. I, I get that. Um, but I'm just going to keep, Doing everything I can to get this team ready to play on Sunday. And inside that wall and kind of how you view yourself, how do you, do you think about that at all? I mean, at any point over the course of the year, offseason, in-season, late season, how much do you think about that? I just look at anything I can control to make this team better. That, that's all I can try to analyze. How you put that into words is difficult. I've certainly got through a myriad of things. I, I try to follow to make sure every facet of this program is, is functioning as high as it needs to. Um, but, but it's difficult for me to sit up here and put into words and how I do all that. Also, one move from the NFL today, the Jets have waived Allan Lazard, who will continue his career somewhere else, arguably, uh, next year. All right. In the NBA last night, if you bet the triple-double on Nikola Jokic, you hit that one. You needed overtime though to do it. The Nuggets beat the Rockets 128 to 125. Houston 1.5 point favorites. This one, of course, went the extra period. Here's the line on Jokic, 39 points, 15 rebounds, and then got that final assist in the overtime period. Jokic talked about the close but big win over Houston. I mean, it's not really exhausting. It's just a different, different style of basketball, you know, um. They are physical, but they're talented too, you know, so they have a, they have a lot of talented guys who can do a lot of different things on the court. So it's, um, it's definitely a challenge. What did you I'm in there at the end of regulation regulation. Ticky tack. Went along with the game tonight, so not surprised by the crew we had out there. Uh, when you got the technical earlier, it looked like because Jokic was pushing on Alfie and they wouldn't call. Is that part of the, the BPO, I guess, yeah, I guess, I mean. Just in general, I think it's poorly officiated game I've seen in a long time to have no business being out there and the crew chief is acting starstruck, so. You're seeing all kinds of inconsistent calls, um. And I'm sure you should have got a few more texts. Udoka getting ready to have to pay off that fine from listening to that press conference. Cooper Flagg's best game as a pro last night, 18 years old, and put up 40 points. What a performance for him. But the Jazzs beat the Mavericks 140 to 33. Dallas was a slight favorite in this one, but they couldn't come through in the overtime period, which makes Will Hardy not happy for the outcome. Well, you know, this is a night where I felt like the team stayed with it. Um, obviously the run late in the 4th quarter was huge, and then over time we played really solid, um. You know, we were undersized for a majority of the night and so protecting the paint takes an effort from everybody, um, you know, I thought as the game. Went on, you know, it improved. They had 38 points in the paint at halftime, ended with 26 in the second half and overtime, so a big improvement there, but, Because what they do to put the pressure on in over time. Yeah, they, they made baskets. We, we didn't, um. We had some good looks that just didn't go down, and they, they capitalized that to start the, uh, you know, we fouled a three-point shooter to start that, uh, over time. So, um, they got off to a better start. But that being said, it was, it's still a 5-point game and we just couldn't get, get one to fall for us, uh, to get closer and so, Big game for Cade Cunningham and the Pistons, 21-5. That's Detroit's record after Cunningham had 32 points and 10 assists. They beat the Boston Celtics 112 to 105 in Detroit last night. Also, the Raptors took care of the Miami Heat. Heat were 5, uh, 4.5 point favorites. Raptors win 106 to 96. Toronto outscores Miami 32 to 19 in the fourth, and the Heat has lost 5 games in a row. Now he has a new gig, a new sub-stack, and for those of you who are following the prediction markets and sports betting, Dustin is a great follow because he's on top of it and following all of the action, and it's such a big story here in 2025. It ain't going away in 206. So we bring Dustin back here to open up the door again and have these conversations as well. Dustin, great to catch up with you. Happy holidays. Thanks for coming back on Newswire. Yeah, I'm stoked to be doing it again. All right. So, Dustin, let's start off with the story of the year as we close out. The sports betting space didn't change significantly in 2025. In fact, Missouri was the only state to legally launch sports betting on December 1st. But what we did find since the last time you and I spoke is that these prediction markets are on a freight train to no end at this point. It appears as though Robinhood, Crypto.com, Halshe, all the operators that are operating. Operating in this space, want to expand it. So, therefore, we're seeing the sports betting companies like FanDuel and DraftKings jump on board. But Dustin, is it to their peril at this point? Because it does appear as though some states don't want prediction markets to be involved, and therefore, if you're getting in bed, so to speak, with some of those companies or some of those activities, you may lose your license, and that really is the big story as we end 2025. Yeah, I mean, it's wild. If we were talking this time last year, this wasn't a blip on anyone's radar, right? Their prediction markets were a small thing, basically just betting on elections. Sports betting starts happening early, earlier this year, and yeah, blows up to the point that now all the major sports books are figuring out whether they want to do this and how they're doing it. We've already seen Fanatics launch its its product, Fanatics Markets. Uh, it's live in, in a bunch of states right now. Now, FanDuel supposedly launching before the end of the year. DraftKings also launching either later this year or, uh, early next year. And yeah, it's kind of fraught. Like they are, they're this, in this, between a rock and a hard place on all of this. They are seeing these companies, Calci and Polymarket and, and Crypto.com come and try to take their lunch, uh, try to offer sports betting in all 50 states. Uh, you know, this is a sports betting exchange. It is a different model than, than state regulated sports books, but they're looking at that and saying, If this is legal, we need to be involved with this, and they, they've taken steps to do that. At the same time, a bunch of states have told prediction markets like CalSci and Crypto.com that you can't do this here. Uh, we're gonna take your license away. We saw the first evidence of that happen with Arizona's regulator taking a license away from underdog for offering daily fantasy sports in Arizona. The knock-on effect is, Does that impact fanatics? Does it impact FanDuel and DraftKings when they launch their prediction markets? We don't know the answer to that question, but it is chaos right now in the, in the sports betting space as they try to figure out what's next for all of the, for all of their prediction markets offerings and how they want to tackle this market. Yeah, I, I think so. And, and look, I, I know that this is growing in a very big way. Uh, there's a company, Citizens predicting that it's funny, no pun intended, that this could be a 10 $10 billion dollar category by 2030. So Dustin, this is really the overall question for all of this regulation aside, operator aside, the bottom line with companies like this is always money. And how will, I mean, I don't wanna use the word get away with, but how will they be able to proceed without paying taxes like all of these other companies are and coming to these agreements? Like, to me, that is the overlying fact, the underlying factor here is, yeah, can they continue? Sure. Can they find different ways around things? We saw this with daily fantasy for a long time too. But how can they get away with not paying any taxes on this stuff? That's what I can't escape. Yeah, I mean, right now, the, the argument is this is legal federally, right? This is under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. They don't need state, uh, say so that they can do this. They don't need to register with states, they don't need to pay taxes at the state level. And they're just going ahead and saying we're doing this in 50 states. Interestingly, crypto.com has said they've pulled out of some states that have been particularly aggressive against this so that they can continue working with partners, uh, in the, in the future like Underdog. Um, but the, the, the, the thing that's kind of like there's a lot of court cases going on right now and that's kind of in the background cause things are slow there, but that is where this ends up. We are probably gonna get a moment sometime in the future, exactly like we did with the fall of the sports betting ban, uh, at the federal level. We are gonna get a Supreme Court case. At some point that says, is this legal or not? And can this continue in the way it is? And that might be years from down, down the road. That may be an unsatisfying answer for a lot of people, but we're gonna be in this limbo at least for a year or two and maybe longer of will this continue under the, the way it is right now? Is sports betting just legal for everyone over 1850 states? That's the way the world is right now until a court says, uh, says otherwise. So, it's the most interesting thing about the future is what. What, how do you game theory this out? And again, that's what the sports book operators are dealing with. How do we game theory this out? What will the courts do? What will the Supreme Court do? And, you know, this has all happened under the Trump administration. And if a Democrat wins in 2028, will that change things? That's like, will they put the genie back in the bottle and say, what? We can't have sports betting under, under, under, uh, under the CFTC. We can't have that. So, we don't know. We, there's so many uncertainties about what's gonna happen moving forward with, uh, prediction markets, event contracts, and sports betting. Ironically, one of the first to launch the prediction markets was the app Crypto.com, and then a lot of the other companies followed, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that maybe Coinbase and uh even Gemini would join the fold here. I mean, arguably those are some of the most popular exchanges for crypto. So if, if Crypto.com is having this success, I could see these companies following. Yeah, I mean, uh, there's, there's gonna be so much in cryptocurrency around this. They see this as their, their, their domain, like, and Robinhood isn't really a crypto company, uh, but they are gonna be the biggest player in this. They already are. They are the, uh, the vast majority of any volume coming from Calci and their prediction markets and sports betting is coming through Robinhood, which is a, you know, a consumer. Financial app. We know Coinbase, 100 million users, a huge crypto exchange, Gemini, the Winklevoss twins, who I think a lot of people will know, uh, just launched their prediction markets, uh, and again, down and down into crypto wallets and other exchanges like, um, you know, Calhi just announced it's gonna be on chain with anything with Solana, which is a, is, is another coin. It's, there's just so much to come on the crypto side of things. So far, it's been, it's been currency and fiat via Calhi, and that's been the big story, but so much more of this is gonna happen. And again, like, I, I, I wonder what the, the sports leagues are gonna think about this. Like they've gotten comfortable with sports betting. There's, there's sports books at state level, all cash. We, we know the customers. Once this is on chain and through cryptocurrency, man, that's a, that's a whole another ball of wax and a lot, there's gonna be a lot of questions about integrity and how this all happens moving forward in, uh, in sports betting for prediction markets.
