Pennsylvania Sports Betting Hits $991M in November

Sports Betting Surge in Pennsylvania: A November Recap

Sportsbooks in Pennsylvania reported substantial activities for November, with an impressive amount of bets placed due to the packed sports calendar, including significant NFL games during Thanksgiving. The state, known for being one of the earliest to legalize sports betting, recorded a total betting handle of $991 million for the month. This spike in betting translated into a record-breaking $125 million in revenue for operators, which corresponds to a 13.1% hold percentage. This percentage indicates that 13.1% of the total bet money was retained by the operators as profits.

Thanksgiving undoubtedly played a critical role in these numbers. The NFL games on this day not only saw high viewership but also turned out to be exciting matchups, unlike some previous years which featured less compelling games. This quality of games likely encouraged more people to place bets. Moreover, it was noted that teams which were heavily favored by the public (receiving at least 60% of bets) performed poorly against the spread, winning only about 37% of the time. This situation typically benefits sportsbooks, as they capitalize on the public's misplaced confidence in these teams.

Additionally, November also saw wider implications in sports betting across the country. Particularly notable was the case of Missouri, which launched sports betting during the month. Many bets were placed on the Kansas City Chiefs, a team that traditionally garners a lot of interest. The Chiefs' failure to meet playoff expectations, thus exiting Super Bowl contention, resulted in profitable outcomes for the sportsbooks considering the volume of futures bets placed on the team.

As Pennsylvania sportsbooks look to continue their success into December, with the onset of NFL playoffs and later on to March Madness, they remain optimistic about repeating such robust performance figures. November proved to be a resurgence month for sports betting, reflecting both the sports fans' enthusiasm and the savvy operations of sportsbooks.
