MMA Referee Under Fire for Shocking Stand-Up Decision

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Combat Sports Report

Controversial Stand-Up Draws Sharp Criticism of MMA Officiating

The decision to stand Moicano up while he had back control was described as one of the most egregious examples of officiating in MMA history. A referee’s role is to protect the fighters, enforce the rules and avoid unnecessarily affecting the fight.

Moicano acknowledged afterward that he could not say for certain that he would have won, but the stand-up did not help him. He was dropped in the following round.

The discussion also highlighted an earlier incident involving referee Dan Miragliotta before Heath Herring fought Brock Lesnar. During the pre-fight instructions, Miragliotta appeared to poke Herring in the eye. The fight then began, and Herring was immediately punched in the face. Although Lesnar was expected to win at that point, the incident was presented as another example of Miragliotta’s poor refereeing.

Other referees were contrasted with Miragliotta. Herb Dean was criticized for sometimes allowing fighters to absorb damage for too long, while Yves Lavigne was remembered for being overly cautious and stopping fights too quickly.

The panel acknowledged that refereeing is difficult but argued that officials make the job harder when they unnecessarily intervene. Standing fighters up from back control was considered particularly unacceptable because wrestling and jiu-jitsu are fundamental parts of mixed martial arts.

Tom Nolan was successfully defending Moicano’s choke attempts, but a submission could have been secured at any moment. Even with only seconds remaining, a choke could have ended the fight before the round concluded. Nolan should not have been rewarded with an escape from a dominant position simply because he could not get out on his own.

Moicano appeared to be slowing down, and Nolan was finding success on the feet. Nolan might still have knocked him out in the third round if Moicano had failed to secure a finish. However, that possibility did not justify removing Moicano from a dominant position. Once the round ended, the fight would have returned to the feet and Nolan would have had another opportunity.

The stand-up remained difficult for the panel to understand. Their conclusion was direct: a referee cannot take a fighter off an opponent’s back in that situation.
