Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Johnny Walker Heavyweight Fight Preview

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Combat Sports Report

Johnny Walker’s Heavyweight Move Creates Questions Ahead of Cortez Acosta Main Event

Cortez Acosta enters the heavyweight main event as a -225 or -230 favorite, depending on the sportsbook. He is coming off losses to Volkoff and Blades, while Johnny Walker recently moved up from light heavyweight and won his heavyweight debut.

Walker dominated that debut, moving forward and landing a vicious knee to secure an early finish. His size appears suitable for the division, but questions remain about his durability after several knockout losses at light heavyweight. Because he previously had to cut significant weight to reach 205 pounds, it is unclear whether his ability to absorb punches will improve at heavyweight.

Cortez Acosta has the power to test Walker’s chin. However, Walker has previously fought cautiously, staying outside and relying on light kicks when he does not want to get hit. Acosta can absorb those kicks without being fazed, which could produce a slow-paced striking match in which neither fighter lands a major power shot early.

Grappling is not expected to play a significant role in the matchup. Both fighters are likely to remain standing, but the opening rounds could be cautious and awkward. Acosta does not typically attack recklessly and has gone three rounds several times in the UFC. Although he takes knockout opportunities when they appear, he has also spent much of his career point fighting his way to victories.

The preferred play is over 1.5 rounds. Walker’s vulnerable chin makes that wager risky, but his tendency to stay outside and protect himself early could allow the fight to last beyond the opening round.
