Sixers’ Defense and Ball Movement Fuel an 8-1 Start
The Sixers are 8-1, and their early success has been driven primarily by their defense rather than overwhelming offensive production. That effort is an encouraging sign for a team with several players capable of defending at a high level.
Joel Embiid looks much better after losing weight, while BJ Escombe, Jalen Brown, LeBron, Dean Wade, Anthony and KCP all contribute defensively in different ways. LeBron may not be the defender he once was, but he remains smart, plays angles and understands positioning. The approach fits Nick Nurse, whose championship team in Toronto featured Kawhi Leonard and other relentless defenders.
If the Sixers continue defending at this level and remain healthy, this could be their best team since the 1983 Sixers. Health remains the key to sustaining their strong start.
The offense is also showing encouraging ball movement. Despite recording only 23 assists on 39 field goals in their latest game, the Sixers do not appear overly reliant on isolation basketball. Jalen Brown, previously known as an over-dribbler, is playing more as a catch-and-shoot option.
Maxi has also been a dynamic presence. His combination of quickness, shooting and scoring ability prompted comparisons to Dwyane Wade, Donovan Mitchell, Isaiah Thomas and Tiny Archibald. He is shifty, can get to the basket and brings excitement to the Sixers.
The team is playing as well as advertised. If that continues, Philadelphia could have plenty to celebrate in June.
