76ers Surge With LeBron, Embiid and Title Expectations

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Philadelphia’s Health and Roster Management Could Define Its Season

Philadelphia looks every bit as good as expected, which is rare in sports. Teams projected to dominate often deliver some level of disappointment, but the Sixers have continued to win regardless of who is available.

The concern is whether they can remain healthy throughout an 82-game season. The team is not especially deep, so keeping Joel Embiid and LeBron James healthy will be critical. Injuries are inevitable across the NBA, making smart roster and minutes management essential.

Expectations rose as soon as Philadelphia made the Jaylen Brown trade and acquired James. The assumption was that the Sixers would roll through their competition, and that is exactly what they have done. James’ decision to join Philadelphia initially seemed bizarre, but it now appears to have been the right choice.

The Sixers’ ultimate goal is not simply reaching 50 or 60 wins. At some point, they may have to prioritize rest over securing the first or second seed. James is unlikely to play back-to-back games, while Embiid’s minutes will also need to be carefully managed.

Philadelphia has enough youth, led by Maxey and company, to weather difficult stretches. If the Sixers manage their veteran stars effectively, they have a strong chance to remain a contender in the East.
