Grizzlies' 6-1 Start: Cam Boozer & Ty Jerome Shine

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Sporting Tribune Today
Grizzlies’ Hot Start, Ty Jerome’s Breakout and Cam Boozer’s Strong Play
The Grizzlies are 6-1, powered by strong performances from Cam Boozer and Ty Jerome. Memphis ranked first in offensive rebound percentage during the opening week, with Boozer playing a significant role. Jerome scored 45, 28 and 31 points in his first three games, totaling 104 points—second only to Ja Morant for a Grizzlies player over that span.
Despite the impressive start, there are doubts about whether Memphis can sustain this level of play. Jerome has been given a complete green light, creating an opportunity he did not have while playing with the Cavaliers and Warriors alongside stars such as Donovan Mitchell and Steph. He has taken advantage of that freedom, but the Grizzlies cannot rely on him as their best player over the long term.
Jerome can be an excellent second or third scoring option. His success also demonstrates the talent throughout the NBA: Any player in the league can score when given enough opportunities. The difference often comes down to whether a player can contribute through defense, rebounding or running an offense when the shots are not available.
Jerome is one of only three players with multiple 40-point games this season, joining Anthony Edwards and Luka. On Monday, he finished with 45 points, five assists, two steals and five three-pointers.
If Memphis is going to build for the future, Boozer must become the central figure, with Jerome playing off him and other pieces surrounding them. Zach Edey is a serviceable NBA player, and the Grizzlies have strong role players, but the roster currently lacks a superstar.
Boozer is averaging 17.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and five assists. He is the only player averaging at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while making two or more three-pointers per game this season. His performance has been even better than expected, building on the high floor he displayed at Duke. His physical stature, understanding of the game and ability to remain composed have allowed him to produce immediately.
Portland’s success, meanwhile, appears more sustainable. Deni Avdija is showing that last season was not a fluke, Dame looks healthy and Ja appears engaged. The team’s young players are embracing their roles, although Dame’s ability to maintain his physical level remains a key question. If he begins to take a step back, Ja may be positioned to increase his impact.
