Luka Doncic Leads Early NBA MVP Race Despite Criticism

Luka Dončić Emerges as an Early MVP Favorite Despite Frustrating Style of Play
Although it is still very early in the season, Luka Dončić has emerged as a leading MVP candidate. After averaging roughly 33 points per game and leading the league in scoring last season, he is now averaging an NBA-best 38.8 points per game.
Over his last five games, Dončić has averaged 43.4 points while shooting 53% from the field, 44% from three and 89% from the free-throw line. That stretch includes four 40-point games and was compared to prime James Harden’s scoring production.
Those numbers are remarkable, but they are not necessarily surprising. Dončić’s ability to score has never been in question, and his offensive output was a major reason for expecting the Lakers to finish among the top four regular-season teams. His career scoring average of 29.3 points trails only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.
Giannis recently called Dončić one of the greatest scorers of all time, but that praise prompted criticism. The argument was that Giannis should focus on defending Dončić rather than celebrating his performance after the game.
The discussion also turned to Miami’s 2-5 start after opening the season 0-4. The team’s defense was expected to be its calling card, led by Giannis and Bam, but Miami has struggled both to score and to stop opponents. Erik Spoelstra’s frustration has been evident.
Despite Dončić’s elite production, his style of play can be difficult to watch. His frequent complaints to referees, reactions toward opposing players and appeals to the bench often overshadow his offensive brilliance. As such a gifted and physically imposing scorer, he does not need to seek a call after every instance of contact.
James Harden and Shai were also cited as prolific scorers whose styles became difficult to watch. Dončić has created a similar reaction because of his constant interactions with officials. Austin Reaves was criticized for the same behavior.
The exception was the second game against the Warriors, when Dončić appeared fully locked in after Yasu called the team out. Rather than constantly working the referees, the belief is that he should focus on working against his opponents. Even with those frustrations, Dončić remains the early leader in the MVP race.
