Craig Carton Critiques Consecutive Game Streak Practices in Sports
Craig Carton shared his views on the practice of preserving players' consecutive games streaks in professional sports, by citing recent examples involving Josh Allen of the NFL and McHale Bridges of the NBA. Carton specifically criticized the decision to briefly play Allen in a game, solely to maintain his consecutive games played streak, arguing that such brief appearances don't truly count as participating in the game.
Turning his attention to the NBA, Carton discussed a similar situation with McHale Bridges of the New York Knicks. According to Carton, despite the Knicks being locked into their playoff position and sitting out key players, Bridges made a brief appearance at the start of a game against the Hornets. Bridges played for just 23 seconds to keep his consecutive games streak alive, which Carton said undermines the authenticity of such records.
Carton expressed disappointment that professional teams manipulate game participation to artificially extend streaks. He argued that a true streak should reflect meaningful participation, not mere technical appearances. Despite his deep admiration for Bridges and acknowledging his incredible durability, Carton firmly believes that his streak should have ended, underscoring that playing virtually every game of a season except one does not equate to a full, uninterrupted streak.
