5. Kentucky Wildcats
There is no direct link between Mark Pope and Tyrese Hunter, but the new Kentucky Wildcats head coach needs to bring in talent. Hunter can produce at a high-major level, and Kentucky will be linked with nearly every talented player in the portal until their roster gets filled out. Hunter would be a good piece that could play well with incoming Drexel center Amari Williams. Hunter is not a perfect fit for Pope’s system, but the Wildcats cannot turn away double-digit high-major scorers.
Kentucky 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +4000
1. Arizona Wildcats
Senior Tyrese Hunter has entered the transfer portal after averaging 11.1 points per game and more than four assists per game in his junior year for the Texas Longhorns. Hunter has started 106 games as a member of Iowa State for one season and Texas for two. There are several suitors for Hunter. One program needing a guard would be the Arizona Wildcats. Kylan Boswell left for Illinois, and the Wildcats will rely nearly exclusively on young incoming recruits with little veteran experience. Hunter cannot be relied on as the primary scoring option for a good team, but he could step in as a starter for Arizona and help bring the young guards along.
Arizona 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +3000
2. Marquette Golden Eagles
The team that might make the most sense would be the Marquette Golden Eagles. Tyrese Hunter is a native of Racine, Wisconsin, and grew up roughly 45 minutes from the Marquette campus. The Golden Eagles recruited him before he committed to Iowa State, and Shaka Smart needs a veteran guard to step in for the departed Tyler Kolek. Marquette has an excellent roster and will be among the favorites to win the Big East in 2024-2025. Adding Hunter would make sense as Kam Jones's backcourt partner.
Marquette 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +4500
3. Houston Cougars
If Tyrese Hunter enjoyed his time in Texas and doesn't want to return to the Midwest, the Houston Cougars make sense. Head coach Kelvin Sampson has raised the Houston program to become one of the better teams in the country, and Hunter would get to stay in the Big 12. Jamal Shead is headed to the NBA, and while Houston does have some candidates to replace that production and minutes, Hunter would be a proven high-major option who plays with the kind of toughness Sampson desires of his players.
Houston 2025 NCAA Title Odds: +1600
4. Creighton Blue Jays
Creighton is one of the more guard-friendly programs in the nation, as head coach Greg McDermott lets his players let it fly from deep and play at a quick tempo. The Bluejays are losing their top four scorers from the 2023-2024 roster and desperately need to add scoring punch and proven high-major players to avoid a down year in the Big East. The Bluejays recruited Tyrese Hunter out of high school and should have a shot at him, as they have ample playing time and an attractive system. Hunter is not a great three-point shooter but could thrive under McDermott.
