College Basketball Takeaways: Illinois, Duke and Florida

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Florida, Duke, Connecticut and Illinois Stand Out Early in College Basketball

Early in the college basketball season, team chemistry and continuity are important factors to watch. Florida looked strong in its win over Miami. John Lucas does a great job with the Hurricanes, but Todd Golden’s Florida team appears to be one of the best.

Duke has also looked good, while Connecticut has an upcoming matchup against Michigan in Boston. Naji Hines, described as “Baby Shaq,” will be one of the players to watch in what should be a great game.

Illinois made a major opening-night statement under Brad Underwood with a 75-point victory. Blowouts of that size are unusual in men’s college basketball because the athleticism among teams is often so close. Since the Lou Henson days, Illinois has not generated this kind of excitement. The team could be a contender for the national championship.

John Calipari’s success comes from his ability to recruit, build programs and establish a culture. Whether at UMass, Memphis or Kentucky, he has consistently attracted players by pointing to names such as Maxi, Booker, SGA, Bam, Kat and AD. Players who want to reach the league see Calipari as a coach who can help put them in position to become millionaires.
