Oklahoma Sooners Preview, Predictions & Season Win Total Pick

The Oklahoma Sooners program looks to be headed in a positive direction in 2024. Brent Venables didn’t have the best start to his tenure with the Sooners, but he bounced back nicely with a solid ten-win season in 2023. The Sooners are a dark horse team to play in the College Football Playoff in 2024. Although we might be a year early in that regard, it’s hard not to get excited about where the Sooners are headed.

Oklahoma Preview: Why You Should Be Bullish

Looking at the Sooners’ defensive roster, it’s pretty easy to be bullish about this group. The Sooners have one of the top secondarys in the country, paired with a strong linebacker core up front. If the Sooners are going to make noise in the SEC, it will likely stem from the success this defense puts together.

Oklahoma Preview: Why You Should Be Bearish

With Jackson Arnold set to take the reigns at quarterback, the Sooners are trotting out an offensive line without experience playing together. The Sooners have no returning offensive lineman in 2024, which could make communication difficult on offense. There are some positive adds that they brought in through the transfer portal, but it could be a downfall of this team in 2024.

Breakout Player: TE Jake Roberts

After transferring in from Baylor, tight end Jake Roberts looks to play a vital role on offense for the Sooners. His numbers won’t jump off the page, but he’s positioned well for a role with this group, especially in the red zone. Don’t be too quick to judge him by his numbers, either, knowing very well that Roberts can play a role as a strong blocker.

Oklahoma X-Factor: QB Jackson Arnold

If the Sooners are going to take the leap in the SEC, all eyes will be on Jackson Arnold to lead them. The former five-star recruit has the potential to be a dominant signal-caller for the Sooners, but we need to see it. The Sooners have been known for their excellent quarterback play over the years, and Arnold has all the necessary tools to be the next high-end QB1.

Oklahoma Schedule Analysis

The Oklahoma Sooners will get a rude awakening with their schedule in their first year as a member of the SEC. The Sooners will need to build momentum in the first half of their schedule, where they only face one ranked opponent until October 12. That’s when death row starts. October 12 has the Sooners hosting N0.4 Texas. Two weeks later, the Sooners visit No.6 Ole Miss. The final three weeks of their schedule feature No.11 Missouri on the road, No. 5 Alabama at home, and No.13 LSU on the road. Things won’t be easy for the Sooners in 2024, meaning if they find success, it’ll be earned.

Oklahoma Prediction: OVER/UNDER 7.5 Wins

Out of the five challenging games mentioned above, the Sooners will likely need a pair of victories to surpass their 7.5-win total in 2024, assuming everything goes as planned in the games they should be sizable favorites in. We know what we’re going to get with this defense. Can Arnold come in and be that difference-making quarterback they need? If you can answer that question, you’ll likely know if the Sooners will exceed their number in 2024. The books don’t seem to have much of an answer when you factor in the equal -110 price tags on the over and under. We’ll land on the over since we’re bullish on Arnold putting it together.

Oklahoma Preseason Pick

Over 7.5 (-110) (FanDuel Sportsbook)

Oklahoma Best Bets

The Sooners project to be a fun team to watch in 2024, with plenty of games to circle on their schedule. Even with a deadly second half on tap, there’s some value in expecting at least eight wins in 2024.
