SMU Mustangs

The SMU Mustangs rise this season was impressive. As we stand right now, it's possible they return to the dance next year, but we'll say it's more in the unlikely category.

Indiana Hoosiers

It was a great story what the Indiana Hoosiers accomplished this year. I don't think Cinderella strikes twice next year. The Hoosiers will be good, but not College Football Playoff good again.

Tennessee Volunteers

The pieces are certainly there for Josh Heupel to lead the Tennessee Volunteers back to the CFP. It's the SEC, so there are no certainties, but we'll pencil the Volunteers in for now.

Ohio State Buckeyes

There's no reason to believe that the Ohio State Buckeyes won't be right back here next season. The Buckeyes are currently the odds on favorite to win the national championship next year.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Marcus Freeman is building a real culture at Notre Dame, which Brian Kelly failed to do. It's hard to envision the Fighting Irish not returning to the CFP next season.

Penn State Nittany Lions

With a returning star quarterback, James Franklin should help lead the Penn State Nittany Lions back to the College Football Playoff. Will this finally be the year he gets over the hump and wins it all? We're not as certain about that.

Texas Longhorns

With Arch Manning set to take the reigns at Texas, the sky is the limit for this program. The Texas Longhorns should be right back in the mix for a national championship again next year.

Arizona State Sun Devils

It's clear that the culture at Arizona State is changing. No one expected them to win the Big 12 last year. As much as it was a great story, I don't think lightning will strike twice here. The Sun Devils won't be back next year, at least not in the capacity of making the bracket.

Boise State Broncos

The talent will still be there, but not to the extent it was this year. The Boise State Broncos returning to the CFP next year is a pipe dream at the moment.

Georgia Bulldogs

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs recruit as well as any program in the country. It's hard to project a College Football Playoff without the Bulldogs in it, and we're not about to start now.

Oregon Ducks

Even though Dan Lanning and company fell short this year, there's no reason to believe the Oregon Ducks won't be back in this same position next year. The Ducks remain a serious national title threat.
