CJ Carr's NFL Draft Outlook, Mechanics and Toughness

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

CJ Carter’s Potential and the Traits That Define an NFL Quarterback

CJ Carter is viewed as a good quarterback prospect with a promising future, though his balance could improve. When his shoulders are not level or his knees are not bent, his accuracy can suffer. Those mechanical issues are considered fixable and could help him become a more consistent passer.

Most quarterback prospects are naturally accurate, but improved balance and control can make that accuracy more consistent. Beyond mechanics, the key evaluation points are how quickly a quarterback processes what he sees and releases the ball, along with his ability to remain accurate under duress.

NFL quarterbacks must be able to deliver throws while off balance, under pressure or with a defender hanging on them. They also need to stand in the pocket and make plays despite knowing they may take a hard hit. Holding the ball too long, as Fields did at Ohio State, can create problems that carry into the NFL.

Kurt stood out in the Europe League because he continued making remarkable downfield throws after absorbing heavy hits. Quarterbacks capable of doing that are difficult to find.

That toughness can also inspire an entire roster. When a quarterback takes a beating in the pocket but continues delivering the ball and making big plays, his teammates recognize his commitment. During difficult moments, players look to the head coach and quarterback for answers. A quarterback who can handle pressure and demonstrate physical toughness provides a significant morale boost.

One wide receiver gained a new appreciation for that responsibility after failing to run his routes at full speed. He was placed at quarterback during a live pass rush so he could see the play from that position. As he waited for the receiver to finish the route, he was hit hard and came away with a different perspective on what a quarterback experiences in the pocket.
