Malachi Toney Injury Shifts Miami vs. Notre Dame Odds

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Malachi Tony’s Reported Surgery Shifts the Miami–Notre Dame Line

Malachi Tony is reportedly opting for surgery, which could allow him to return for the College Football Playoff. The news moved the Miami–Notre Dame line from 6.5 toward 7 before Miami became available at 7.5 with -120 odds.

One view was that Tony’s absence would not be a major problem for Miami. The argument was that Miami has depth at wide receiver and that quarterbacks make receivers, not the other way around. Jeremiah Smith’s recent performance without Julian saying was cited as an example of how much a receiver can be affected by a change at quarterback.

The opposing view was that Tony is being severely undervalued. He was described as a special player and one of the top three players in college football, making his absence a significant loss. Even so, both sides agreed that Mensa could still play well and help Miami keep the game close.

At 7.5 and -120, the number was viewed as the best available line and unlikely to move any higher. Getting the extra hook strengthened the case for backing Miami.

Questions remained about how the injury happened at practice and how the situation progressed so quickly to reported surgery. One side viewed the timing as smoke and mirrors, but the improved betting number made the Miami position even more appealing.
