Miami’s Explosive Offense Faces a Major Test Against Notre Dame
Miami owns a top-15 win, but questions remain about the strength of a schedule that includes Central Michigan, a down Clemson and a down Florida State. Saturday’s matchup with Notre Dame could reveal more about how good the Hurricanes are.
Miami is unquestionably one of the country’s most elite offenses, if not the No. 1 offense. Darian Mensa and Malachi Tony are two of the best players in the country, producing every week regardless of double coverage, triple coverage or any other defensive approach.
The question is whether any team can consistently keep pace with Miami’s scoring. North Carolina surprisingly played the Hurricanes close in Chapel Hill. Although Billy Edwards and the offense were not considered elite, they performed like an elite unit in that game.
College football has few well-rounded teams, with every team carrying flaws. Miami appears to be among those with the fewest problems.
Notre Dame presents a significant challenge, particularly on defense. The key matchup will be Miami’s high-powered offense against a Notre Dame defense featuring elite cornerbacks and safeties, along with a strong defensive line.
Offensively, CJ Carr is one of the best quarterbacks in the country, but Notre Dame does not have a player like Malachi Tony or an abundance of elite skill-position weapons. Its supporting players are viewed as moderate to good rather than special.
Notre Dame is the best team Miami will face during the regular season, while Miami is also the best team on Notre Dame’s schedule. That makes the game a defining test for both teams.
This could be the most explosive offense in Hurricanes history. The quarterback is completing 80% of his passes, while the offense is running for close to 200 yards per game.
Miami also has playmakers throughout the offense. Cooper Barkate does not receive the same attention as Malachi Tony, but he frequently wins one-on-one matchups. Elijah Lofton is another special weapon at tight end and out of the backfield. Against North Carolina, he hurdled a defender, kept his feet and turned the play into a 78-yard gain.
With that collection of weapons, there is a strong case that this is the most explosive offense Miami has ever had.
