Miami vs. Notre Dame Prediction: High-Scoring Showdown

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Notre Dame Favored Over Miami in Potential High-Scoring Matchup

There is still a long way to go before the College Football Playoff field is decided, but this weekend’s games will be crucial. One of the biggest matchups features Miami visiting Notre Dame, with the line holding around 7.5 points and the total at 55.5.

The total had been around 57.5 before the Malachi Tony news. Despite the slight drop, this still looks like a game that could produce plenty of points. Notre Dame is a difficult place to play, but this does not appear to be one of the program’s greatest defenses. The team also misses Ja'Darian Price and Love and is not running the ball as effectively as it did over the past couple of seasons.

Miami’s biggest defensive problem is not its front seven but its secondary. An over may not be the recipe for Miami to win, but it could be the recipe for the Hurricanes to cover. If Miami gives up too many points, it will be difficult to come away with a victory.

The line is surprising because Notre Dame has not looked like a great team. Still, oddsmakers set these numbers for a reason. If Notre Dame wins 27-14, the spread will make sense, but that is not the type of game expected here.

This matchup could resemble Miami’s games against North Carolina and Florida State, and the Hurricanes may be overdue for one of those close contests to end in a loss. The prediction is for Notre Dame to win, Miami to cover and the game to go over the total, with a possible final score around 33-30.

Miami may have one of the best offenses in the country, but it will struggle to win a championship if its defense cannot stop opposing offenses. The defensive issues appeared in the second half against Wake Forest and continued against Florida State and North Carolina.

Miami was dealing with several injuries in the secondary against Wake Forest, forcing backup players into action. However, injuries do not fully explain the defense’s poor tackling. Opponents have consistently gained extra yards after contact, with players bouncing off attempted tackles for another five or six yards.

The starters are now available, so there are no more excuses. Miami must tackle better or risk being embarrassed at Notre Dame. The defense has to improve, especially with the offense losing its best weapon.

Notre Dame’s stadium presents another challenge. Its fans are diehards, and the setting is considered a difficult place for visiting teams, even if other venues such as Clemson or LSU at night may also belong in that conversation.
