UCLA’s Strong Run Faces a Test Against Minnesota
UCLA’s matchup with Minnesota presents a difficult betting decision. Minnesota is considered better than Michigan State, but the small point spread raises questions about whether the Bruins’ impressive run could come to an end.
UCLA is 7-0-1 against the spread and 8-0 overall, making the Bruins a covering machine even when they do not play particularly well. That was the case against Michigan State, when those backing the Spartans may have appeared to be on the right side until late in the game.
The Bruins average more than 200 rushing yards per game, giving them a chance to control the matchup and score against Minnesota. While there was interest in backing Minnesota, the line was considered too low to make that play.
The only lean was toward the under, though 38.5 also appeared too low given that both teams can score. Minnesota’s loss to Penn State went to overtime, but the under still hit. The projected final score was UCLA 24, Minnesota 20, without a strong enough edge to place a bet.
The larger question for UCLA is how much margin for error remains. Several metrics may suggest the Bruins should be ranked inside the top five, but they are ranked eighth. A loss to Minnesota would cause them to plummet, and later wins against Illinois and at Michigan might not make enough of a difference.
UCLA is currently listed at -170 to make the College Football Playoff at one sportsbook. However, the view expressed was that a committee member likely would not agree that the Bruins deserve those odds.
