Utah vs. BYU Preview: Big 12 Title Stakes & Betting Pick

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From SportsGrid College Football Today

Utah Favored Over BYU in a Game With Major Big 12 Implications

LJ Martin is expected to return for BYU ahead of a massive matchup with Utah. The Utes are unbeaten in conference play, while the Cougars and Texas Tech each have one loss. With Utah and BYU not scheduled to face Texas Tech, the winner will have a strong chance to reach the Big 12 championship game and compete for a College Football Playoff berth.

Utah has exceeded expectations and enters the matchup ranked third in the country. The Utes delivered an impressive road win over Cincinnati and have one of the nation’s most balanced offenses, averaging close to 500 yards per game with roughly 260 through the air and 240 on the ground.

BYU’s late win over Houston raised concerns, and the Cougars could struggle to contain Utah’s running game. Although Martin’s return should help BYU, there are still questions about whether Bear Bachmeyer can consistently attack Utah’s defense through the air.

Utah’s improvement on defense could be the difference. After ranking 108th against the run last year, the Utes are now 22nd in that category and 15th in overall defense. Combined with an offense capable of running and passing effectively, Utah has one of the most balanced teams in the country.

The pick is Utah laying four points. A victory would put the Utes in a strong position to reach the Big 12 title game, and making that game could be enough to secure a playoff spot even if they lose the conference championship. Utah may not have the star power of Miami or Georgia, but its balance on offense and defense gives it the potential to make noise.
