The Chicago Bears have made a surprise move at No. 10 in the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting tight end Colston Loveland out of Michigan. Heading to the Windy City, Loveland becomes the first tight end selected this year, beating out Mackey Award winner Tyler Warren of Penn State, who had been the heavy betting favorite to go first at the position.

Draft analysts and sportsbooks had Warren projected as a top-10 lock, but Loveland’s elite route-running ability, hands, and blocking versatility ultimately gave him the edge in Chicago’s eyes. The Bears, who were widely expected to target running back Ashton Jeanty or pivot to Omarian Hampton, instead chose to give their offense a dynamic dual-threat tight end.

Loveland thrived in Michigan’s run-heavy system, showcasing his ability to act as a sixth offensive lineman while also producing through the air—despite inconsistent quarterback play from Alex Orji and Davis Warren. His skill set has drawn comparisons to Travis Kelce and Brock Bowers, particularly for his knack for finding soft spots in zone coverage and creating mismatches.

The Bears are clearly prioritizing offensive flexibility under center and across the formation. With another early second-round pick, running back still remains on the board, but they’ve locked in a potential future Pro Bowl tight end in Loveland—who gives their passing game a much-needed boost in both the short and intermediate routes.
