Eagles vs. Patriots Best Bet ATS: Eagles ML (+120)
The Eagles and Patriots enter tonight 1-0 in preseason action. Still, I found the Eagles’ win last week against the Baltimore Ravens far more convincing than the Patriots’ win against the talentless Carolina Panthers. It’s fair to say that the Patriots will likely trot out more of their starters on both sides of the ball, but the Eagles offense last week looked competent, led by Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee. Plus, the Eagles’ defensive starters played longer than most expected. In their single joint practice session this week, reports said that the Eagles dominated the Patriots on both sides of the ball, so we’ll look for the same result tonight at plus-money.
Eagles vs. Patriots Best Bet Total: UNDER 35.5
The Eagles-Ravens game last week combined for just 29 points, with the Patriots-Panthers battle combining for just 20. With tonight’s total set at 35.5, neither offense gives us much confidence against likely two defenses with many starters on the field. Betting the under in preseason action is never a bad bet, so we’ll see a lot of solid stuff from both defenses tonight.
Eagles Offensive Player To Watch: Will Shipley, RB
Saquon Barkley was the Eagles’ biggest splash of the offseason, but the other running back touches are up for grabs. Fourth-round pick Will Shipley saw a ton of work in the first preseason game and should have another huge opportunity tonight to make his mark. No player on the Eagles’ offense will get more touches than Shipley tonight, so we’re excited about what kind of magic he can create tonight.
Eagles Defensive Player to Watch: Jeremiah Trotter Jr., LB
The Eagles’ most significant need on defense for the past few seasons has been the linebacker position, and we saw them use some resources this summer by signing Devin White to a one-year deal. Outside of White, the other linebacker snaps are up for grabs, and rookie linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. has every chance to earn a significant role as a rookie. The son of Eagles’ legend Jeremiah Trotter is already a fan-favorite, and he had a great showing in the first preseason game and other practices. Fans want Trotter Jr. to be on the field immediately, and he has a real chance of doing so.
Panthers Offensive Player to Watch: Drake Maye, QB
Drake Maye wasn’t overly impressive in his first preseason appearance against the Panthers last week. Still, he’ll get an opportunity to face an Eagles’ defense tonight with a ton of talent and will likely see solid action. Last week, most of the Eagles’ defensive starters played multiple series against the Ravens, so we expect a similar workload tonight against the Patriots. Seeing Maye against more proven NFL-caliber players will be a test worth watching.
Panthers Defensive Player to Watch: Christian Gonzalez, CB
Reports from the Patriots’ camp thus far have not been a good sign for Christian Gonzalez, and he also struggled in the joint practice between the Patriots and Eagles. Clips have shown Gonzalez getting burned by the Eagles’ top wide receivers AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, so seeing him in game action against whatever starters the Eagles trot out on offense will be much-needed for not only his confidence but also the Patriots to have a respectable secondary.
