NFL Week 3 Thursday Night Football Pick: Jets vs. Patriots
Aaron Rodgers finally recorded his first win with the New York Jets in Week 2, erasing two deficits throughout the Jets’ road game against Tennessee to come away with a 24-17 win. Now, Rodgers will look to keep the momentum rolling against a stout Patriots defense that has held good offenses in check to start 2024.
The Patriots have dominated this head-to-head matchup in recent years, even after Tom Brady’s departure. New England’s new regime, led by first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, has looked very good early in the year, beating Cincinnati 16-10 on the road in Week 1 and nearly coming away with a second win during a 23-20 overtime loss to Seattle in Week 2.
The Patriots’ biggest weakness is its pass protection along the offensive line. Veteran QB Jacoby Brissett has managed to overcome adversity, but the Jets’ defensive front seven is a talented unit that should disrupt the Patriots’ backfield on passing plays. Expect New England to heavily feature its rushing attack, led by RB Rhamondre Stevenson, exploiting a Jets run defense that has surrendered at least 130 rushing yards in both outings this season.
New England’s defense is dominant against the run, which will force Rodgers to drop back and pass more, as the Patriots will likely prioritize eliminating Jets running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen from creating explosive plays in the run game. The Patriots held Cincinnati and Seattle to 70 or fewer rushing yards while getting gashed for 312 yards by the Seahawks in Week 2.
Ultimately, I expect New England to control the pace of play and score enough points to stay within six points of the Jets by the end of this divisional bout. Let’s back New England at +6.5 at -115 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Pick: New England Patriots +6.5 (-115)
