5. Denver Broncos
Preseason Record: 3-0
Preseason ATS Record: 3-0AFC West Odds: +2000
Super Bowl Odds: +25000Don't be fooled by their immaculate preseason record. The Denver Broncos are still pretenders.
Despite finishing a perfect 3-0 straight up and against the spread, the Broncos remain distant +25000 to win Super Bowl LIX in February. Moreover, they face some of the longest odds on the Division Winners board at +2000 to claim their first AFC West banner since 2015.
Granted, Denver scored at least 27 points in all three outings, precipitating a +55 point differential, but nobody rode their starters except Sean Payton. Former second-overall pick Zach Wilson saw action in all three contests, including virtually all of Saturday's 38-12 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Still, it wasn't enough to earn the starting gig, with Bo Nix shining in training camp and two preseason games.
Enjoy it well it lasts Broncos fans, this is the pinnacle of glory for the 2024 season.
1. New York Jets
Preseason Record: 3-0
Preseason ATS Record: 3-0AFC East Odds: +160
Super Bowl Odds: +1800Robert Saleh deserves a ton of credit for having the New York Jets ready to hit the ground running in Week 1. The Jets wrapped up a perfect preseason, going 3-0 straight up and against the spread while relying almost exclusively on backup and unproven players.
As usual, the Jets' defense was up to the test. New York held its opponents to a combined 35 points across all three preseason games, helping them secure victory despite being priced as underdogs in every outing. As a result, they have sprung to the top of the AFC East futures board, currently priced as the odds-on favorite to win the division, usurping the Buffalo Bills.
The Jets need all the confidence they can get as they head into the season-opener versus the defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers. But even that line is on the move. After opening as +6 underdogs, the Jets have risen to +3.5 as we approach the start of the regular season.
2. Chicago Bears
Preseason Record: 4-0
Preseason ATS Record: 4-0NFC North Odds: +340
Super Bowl Odds: +3500No one needs a win more than Matt Eberflus. The Chicago Bears head coach has gotten off to a rough start in the Windy City, compiling a fireable 10-24 record through his first two seasons behind the helm. However, Chicago's strong showing in the preseason may be the vote of confidence to get him off the hot seat.
The Bears roared through the preseason, compiling a sterling 4-0 record while maximizing production on both sides of the ball. Chicago averaged 28.8 points per game on offense, holding opponents to a paltry 11.8. The ensuring +68-point differential was easily the best of the preseason, albeit with one extra game compared to the rest of the league.
Next up, the Bears need to show they're for real in the regular season. They've inspired some sharp bettors to take out futures positions on them in the Division and Super Bowl markets, but there's still a lot of ground to make up.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
Preseason Record: 3-0
Preseason ATS Record: 3-0AFC South Odds: +270
Super Bowl Odds: +4500The Jacksonville Jaguars head into the start of the regular season with a ton of momentum. The Jags easily dispatched the NFC South favorite Atlanta Falcons 31-0 in Week 3, capping a perfect preseason.
The Jaguars were incredibly efficient on both sides of the ball, but they deserve more credit for their stout defensive efforts. Jacksonville held its opponents to 6.7 points per game, giving up an average of just 209.3 yards per game. That's a precedent-setting tone they'll need to maintain heading into the 2024 regular season as +270 to reclaim their spot atop the AFC South.
Until they manage to string together an entire 17-game season, the preseason only results in morale victories. But the outlook is positive, and we are heading into a crucial Week 1 clash against the Miami Dolphins.
4. Minnesota Vikings
Preseason Record: 3-0
Preseason ATS Record: 3-0NFC North Odds: +850
Super Bowl Odds: +8000No one expects much from the Minnesota Vikings this season, and that was reflected in their preseason gambling odds. The Vikes were underdogs in all three outings, defying the odds and claiming victory each time out. Now, they'll need to find a way of replicating that success in the regular season.
The loss of J.J. McCarthy was a catalyst for an unexpected quarterback battle. Sam Darnold is the starter heading into the regular season, leaving Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall to slug it out for the backup job. Mullens appears to have guaranteed himself the role, but not without both signal-callers flaunting their best stuff through the preseason.
The outlook is still guarded moving forward, but the Vikings' players showed more fight in this roster than we thought there would be. Minnesota will need all of that when the regular season kicks off.
