Brandon Aiyuk's 49ers Return Raises Major Questions

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From NFL Pro Football Today

Brandon Ayuk’s Return Leaves San Francisco Facing an Uncertain Resolution

Brandon Ayuk is back in San Francisco, but questions remain about the money he reportedly owes the 49ers for not playing. The team’s comments appear to be little more than eye wash at this point.

Ayuk may need to return to play, but paying $13 million back to the team does not appear realistic. One possible outcome is a settlement followed by his release, allowing him to play elsewhere. However, it is unclear which team would want him at this stage.

The Washington Commanders could be a possibility now that Terry McLaurin is out. That opportunity could give Ayuk a chance to show he can be on his best behavior. Still, the situation is so frustrating and unusual that it would not be shocking if he never played another NFL down.

George Kittle’s comments earlier this week reflected the uncertainty. Asked about Ayuk returning to the facility, Kittle responded, “No comment,” questioned whether it would happen and directed further questions to Shanahan and Lynch.

The 49ers also have major concerns at wide receiver. Mike Evans is not playing this week, and sources indicate he will not play next week either because of his Achilles injury.

DeMarcus Robinson is currently the 49ers’ number-one wide receiver, which cannot last if the team plans to reach the Super Bowl. They need more depth. DeShaun Stribling may return by December, and other players could get healthy, but Christian Kirk has gone back to injured reserve. For now, the 49ers’ wide receiver group is a complete mess.
