McDaniel Chooses OC Role Over Head Coaching Positions
It was somewhat surprising to learn that McDaniel, a prominent figure widely expected to secure another head coaching role, opted instead for the offensive coordinator position with the Chargers under Harbaugh. This decision is seen as an excellent move for Harbaugh and the Chargers, especially with a talent like Justin Herbert for McDaniel to work with.
Throughout NFL history, we've observed that certain professionals excel more as coordinators rather than as head coaches. This appears to be the case with McDaniel who might be following the paths of Noah Turner and Wade Phillips, coaches who found more success in specialized roles than as head coaches.
Joining the Chargers could also serve as a strategic career rehabilitation for McDaniel. Despite interest from multiple teams, such as the Eagles and the Commanders, choosing the Chargers offers him a chance to revitalize his reputation. Should his tenure prove successful, leading to high-scoring seasons, it could pave the way for future head coaching opportunities. With head coaching changes occurring almost every season, McDaniel may only need to wait a couple of years before another shot at a top position comes around.
