Ravens Face Quarterback Questions as Jaguars Emerge as Serious Contenders
Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta could be exploring options before next Tuesday’s trade deadline, including a possible attempt to acquire Kirk Cousins from the Raiders. However, trading for Brissett suggests Baltimore is putting its chips in the middle of the table with him instead.
The immediate outlook is difficult, but upcoming games against the Chargers and Panthers, along with a late bye, could give the Ravens a path to nine or 10 wins. The apparent goal is to remain competitive and buy time for Lamar to return rather than completely giving up on the season.
Still, the move feels like rearranging chairs on the Titanic. Baltimore is 4-4, and there have not been many encouraging signs that the season is destined to end well.
Jacksonville, meanwhile, looks capable of contending not only in the AFC but across the entire NFL. The defense is solid, Trevor Lawrence has shown encouraging growth, Parker Washington can be a number-one option, and the running game is dependable.
The Jaguars might not be elite in any single area, but they also lack an obvious weakness. A standalone game against a Baltimore team that has lost three straight and is deep into its quarterback depth chart could become a coming-out party for Jacksonville. With a wide audience watching, the Jaguars have an opportunity to show they could win the entire thing.
