Patriots' Playoff Hopes: A.J. Brown & Drake Maye's Health

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Sporting Tribune Today
Questions Surround the Patriots, AJ Brown and New England’s Offense
The Patriots appear to have improved as the season has progressed, with Drake May recovering from a difficult first few weeks. However, there are still questions about whether the team can overcome the Bills in its division and earn the confidence of fans if it reaches the playoffs.
New England had an impressive season last year, reaching the Super Bowl behind a strong defense despite facing several formidable defensive opponents. The run ended with a decisive loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and it remains difficult to determine what to expect from the Patriots now.
Much of the concern centers on AJ Brown. The Patriots acquired him to give Drake May a true number-one receiver and a dominant target for a potential playoff run, but the move has not produced the expected results. Brown has struggled to stay on the field and has dropped passes at a high rate.
One view is that Brown’s knee is a serious issue and that Philadelphia sold high on him. The Patriots’ receiving corps has not improved as hoped, while Henderson’s absence due to mental health concerns has also created problems in the backfield. Although the defense remains good, the offense has not performed well.
Others remain confident in Brown. He has never relied on outrunning defenders, instead building his game around timing and winning contested catches. From that perspective, once his timing returns and he begins securing those 50-50 opportunities again, the situation could improve.
The larger concern is whether his physical condition is preventing that recovery. Brown previously dealt with a high ankle sprain, and the discussion raised the possibility that compensating for the ankle contributed to his knee trouble. Reports that the injury flared up, along with his ankle and knee designations, have increased concern about his ability to remain available.
The Patriots made the move for Brown because they wanted to pair Drake May with an elite top receiver. So far, injuries and dropped passes have prevented that partnership from developing as planned, leaving significant questions about Brown’s health and New England’s offense.
