The Edmonton Oilers survived a late fury from the Canucks and will now face off with the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals. The Stars advanced after taking down the Colorado Avalanche in six games. The Oilers will have their work cut out for them against Dallas, knowing very well this group is on a different level than their two prior opponents, the Los Angeles Kings and the aforementioned Canucks.

Can the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup for the first time in the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl era?

Buy or Sell: Edmonton Oilers to Win the Stanley Cup

It’s no secret that McDavid and Draisaitl have been exceptional in the postseason and are a key reason why this team has advanced to Round 3. The issue for the Oilers is whether you trust their scoring depth and Stuart Skinner in goal. The Oilers ‘ bottom-six forward group has contributed little to the offense, and if something doesn’t change in the conference finals, it’s hard to see them moving on against a deep Dallas team that plays exceptional defense. Skinner has had his moments in these playoffs, but he’s also lost the net. It’ll be on him to find another gear and demonstrate why he can be the future of this team in the net.

The Oilers boast the third-shortest Stanley Cup odds of the four remaining teams. All four teams prices are between +230 and +360, signaling there’s not a ton separating these squads. The Stars are the leader at +230, while the Oilers are at +260. The Stars are a -120 favorite over the Oilers in the conference finals, while Edmonton is priced at +100. In terms of these numbers, it will come down to whether or not the Oilers can get a save and any production from their forward depth. We know what McDavid and Draisaitl can do, but unless they have another level beyond elite, it’s hard to see them willing this group to a place they haven’t been since 2006. Although, in theory, there’s some value in Edmonton’s Stanley Cup odds, it’s hard to fade the Stars or Panthers right now, knowing they have the recipe of what it takes to win in the postseason. If the Oilers lose Game 1 on the road, it might be worth rechecking the odds, especially if they fall into the +350 to +400 range. For now, though, we’ll be fading the number.
