SAN DIEGO — The Wave's season comes to an end Friday night as the Utah Royals earn a 1-0 quarterfinal victory at Snapdragon Stadium to advance in the NWSL playoffs.

Friday’s quarterfinal hosting honors belonged to the 2nd seed San Diego Wave, finishing their regular season on 58 points, with the Utah Royals visiting Snapdragon Stadium as the 7th seed underdogs.

The Wave entered the playoffs looking to build on last year’s campaign, hoping to advance past the quarterfinals after their playoff run ended at that same stage a season ago.

San Diego came into these NWSL playoffs on near-perfect form, finishing their regular season with a seven-match unbeaten streak, including six wins and a draw.

The Wave also had the upper hand over the Royals throughout the 2026 regular season, sweeping both meetings with a 2-1 road victory at America First Field on March 22, followed by a 4-2 win at Snapdragon Stadium on Aug. 21.

Within the first five minutes of the opening whistle, the Wave’s best chance of the half was pushed and saved away by Royals’ goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, as Melanie Barcenas was unable to convert off her headed attempt near the goal area.

The two sides continued to test each other’s goalkeepers, with McGlynn and Wave’s Sandra Paños making key saves in the first 20 minutes.

Despite the majority of dangerous play coming from the homeside, the Royals were first to strike in this quarterfinal as forward Kiana Palacios gave Utah the 1-0 lead at the 30-minute mark.

The scoring play all started with a Cloé Lacasse grounded cross near the penalty spot, as Palacios took advantage of the time and space to pick out the bottom right corner of the net.

In the club’s first-ever playoff game, Palacios made history for her side, recording the Royals' first-ever playoff goal.

The remaining portion of the first 45-minutes saw both sides on the end of multiple threatening chances, as the opening period’s whistle blew at that 1-0 scoreline with Utah taking their slim lead into the halftime break.

Another huge Wave scoring chance was met with another goal-denying save by Mandy McGlynn, this time in the 61-minute to slap away the equalizing goal in a multi-player-deflected shot originally coming from Wave forward Ludmila.

The push for the equalizing goal continued throughout the second half for the Wave, but time ran out for the hosting side with the full-time whistle blowing for the 1-0 Utah victory as the Royals clinched their spot in this season's NWSL semi-finals.

Following the 1-0 quarterfinal defeat to the Utah Royals, San Diego Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall spoke to the media about the disappointing end to his squad's season while praising the team's accomplishments throughout the year.

“Of course, you're very disappointed when you want to go all the way and then all of a sudden you're out one game, and you can't play, and you're out and the season is done.”

“I refuse to let that define our season. Our season has been a beautiful season, and the players deserve to be celebrated for that.”

After a superb second-place finish in this NWSL’s regular season, the Wave's 2026 title dreams ended early in their playoff run, falling at the quarterfinal stage in back-to-back seasons.
