MLS Momentum, Miami’s Ambitions and Messi’s Changing Image
With Messi retired from international competition and fully focused on MLS, attention turns to the league’s final weekend. For LAFC supporters, it has been a disappointing season. The team’s coach left midway through the campaign, and his replacement has not been able to get the black and gold playing at the expected level. LAFC is now barely qualifying for the playoffs.
Elsewhere, Nashville is enjoying a record-breaking season with 74 points through 33 games. Miami, powered by Messi, Berter Ame, Luis Suarez and the league’s support, has 59 points after the same number of matches. The 15-point difference represents five wins.
The regular season concludes with Decision Day, when every team plays at the same time to determine who qualifies. The Eastern Conference field includes Nashville, Miami, New England, Chicago, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, with Orlando in the play-in.
Miami is a strong market and a great city for football. The club has a new stadium, is investing heavily in the project and brought in the sport’s most famous player.
Messi continues to perform at a level well above the league average and keeps scoring goals. However, his attitude in MLS has drawn criticism. During his years in Barcelona, he presented an image of respect and generally stayed out of trouble. In MLS, he has appeared more arrogant toward other players and has been described as a low-key bully toward younger and lesser-known opponents.
He also frequently confronts referees to ask for cards and fouls, with officials often granting those requests. His ability and accomplishments remain unquestioned, but there is a desire to see a friendlier version of Messi on the field—one who acts more like an ambassador for the game.
With Ronaldo announcing his retirement from the Portugal team, the November international games will be the first in almost 15 years without either Ronaldo or Messi.
