Reflecting on Timbers and LAFC: The Player’s Journey

As a footballer playing for some of the best teams in MLS history, the journey has been intense and transformative. Joining Portland Timbers was a significant shift in my career. From making an immediate impact to experiencing fluctuating team performances, my relationship with the team epitomized the highs and lows of professional sports. In 2013, Coach Caleb Porter's arrival marked a strategic shift, emphasizing a Tiki-Taka style and integrating Diego Valeri into our ranks, which significantly altered the club's dynamics.

The essence of my time with the Timbers wasn't just about the games played but also about understanding and respecting the fan culture. In Portland, where the fan base is incredibly passionate, every match felt like a European showdown. The fans' loyalty was palpable, and their expectations were sky-high. Their direct approach in demanding better performances pushed me and my teammates to exceed our limits and strive for greatness. Landing the winning goal in the MLS Cup was a defining moment, securing our legacy in the annals of the club’s history.

Transitioning to LAFC presented a different set of challenges and opportunities. The club’s strategy prioritized establishing a genuine connection with the diverse Los Angeles community. From the start, LAFC was built on the unity between the club and its fans. We took to the streets to engage with various cultural groups, crafting a team identity reflective of the city’s dynamic spirit. This foundational approach not only attracted a broad fan base but also cultivated a deep sense of belonging and pride among all associated with LAFC.

The commitment to the fans extended to the stadium experience, notably through the implementation of safe standing areas, enhancing the vibrant atmosphere expected in every match. Taking cues from successful fan engagement strategies like those of the Timber’s Army, LAFC created the 3252 section, which became a cornerstone of our fan interaction.
