WSL Current Season Overview and Standings
Gotham FC is leading the Women's Soccer League (WSL) standings this season, continuing their dominant performance as the reigning champions. Despite barely making the playoffs last season, they impressively clinched the championship, showcasing their strength and resilience.
In their recent match, Gotham FC tied with ACFC, a result that's seen as a respectable outcome against the top-ranked team, especially considering ACFC's aspirations for a win. Following closely is the Washington Spirit, an exceptionally formidable squad returning with a healthy Trinity Robin, which significantly bolsters their game. The Washington Spirit finished second last season, losing the championship to Gotham FC for the second consecutive time.
The Portland Thorns and Utah Royals are displaying strong performances as well, with the Utah Royals, in particular, witnessing a major turnaround. From being near the bottom last season and missing out on the playoffs, they are now comfortably in fourth place, proving themselves as this season's underdogs.
The North Carolina Courage and San Diego Wade are also teams to watch, with the latter currently in sixth place, a position originally anticipated for ACFC. On the other hand, Kansas City Currents, despite having a robust fan base, are finding themselves in seventh place, reflecting a slight dip compared to their performance a couple of seasons ago.
Rounding out the lower half of the standings are Reign in eighth place and ACFC in ninth, still managing to stay within the top ten despite not being at the forefront. Teams like Houston Dash and Orlando Pride, featuring star players like Marta and forward Benda, are finding themselves lower in the standings, which is somewhat unexpected given their talent.
Newcomers Denver Summit and Boston Legacy are struggling to make a significant impact in their debut seasons, with Denver managing to stay out of the last place, a spot currently held by Racing Louisville Bay despite their strong start to the season. Chicago also finds itself trying to gain a foothold, not faring well in the competition so far.
