On his 37th birthday, Novak Djokovic triumphed over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in a rain-interrupted match to advance to the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, participating in this ATP 250 tournament in Switzerland for the first time, won convincingly with a 6-3, 6-3 scoreline.
This victory marked Djokovic’s 1,100th match win on the ATP Tour, making him only the third player in history to achieve this milestone, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.
The celebratory atmosphere was heightened when the crowd serenaded Djokovic with ‘Happy Birthday’ and tournament officials presented him with a chocolate birthday cake. “My birthday wouldn’t have been the same if I had not won the match," Djokovic remarked. “I’m very grateful for all the people that came out to support me and thank you for the birthday song, that was very special for me."
Currently ranked number one in the world, Djokovic is yet to reach a final in 2024. His next opponent will be either Canada’s Denis Shapovalov or the Netherlands’ sixth seed Tallon Griekspoor.
In the previous round, Hanfmann had defeated Britain’s Andy Murray, who was playing his first ATP Tour-level match since sustaining ankle ligament injuries at the Miami Open in March, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. However, against Djokovic, the 32-year-old German, ranked 85th in the world, found his serve broken in the sixth game and squandered two break-point opportunities shortly after.
Serving for the set at 5-3, Djokovic faced four break points from Hanfmann before the match was halted at deuce due to rain, leading to a delay of over an hour. Upon resumption, Djokovic swiftly clinched the set, though Hanfmann managed to break his serve early in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead.
Hanfmann had a chance to secure a double break but failed to convert, allowing Djokovic to get back on serve with the aid of a skillful sliced drop shot. Djokovic then dominated, winning six consecutive games, including two stunning cross-court winners in the ninth game, to seal the victory.
Earlier this month, Djokovic experienced a surprising 6-2, 6-3 defeat in just 67 minutes to Alejandro Tabilo in the Italian Open third round. Djokovic attributed the loss to lingering effects from an accidental head injury caused by a water bottle two days prior.
Looking ahead, the French Open begins on Sunday, where Djokovic aims to defend his title and claim his fourth championship at Roland Garros.
