J.J. McCarthy is likely headed to the NFL after the National Championship Game. That leaves a vacancy in Ann Arbor. Alex Orji appears to be the likely successor, but the current redshirt freshman is extremely unproven and primarily just a running threat right now. 1. Auburn Tigers
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze coached Salter at Liberty, so there is a prior relationship. If the two got along well, the Tigers would make a lot of sense. Payton Thorne struggled mightily for Auburn in a disappointing 2023 campaign. Salter has a few seasons of eligibility remaining, so he could help the Tigers in 2024 and 2025. Salter might not be capable of leading an SEC title team, but he's an undeniable upgrade on Thorne.
2. Miami Hurricanes
Tyler Van Dyke transferred to Wisconsin, but Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes clearly had a plan to zero in on Cam Ward. Ward visited Coral Gables but ultimately chose to declare for the NFL Draft. As the carousel of quarterbacks nears a stopping point, the Hurricanes are left without a proven option. Enter Kaidon Salter. The Liberty transfer has no prior connections to the Hurricanes, but this could be a good option for both sides. Cristobal and his staff are recruiting well on the high-school front, but the Canes will be rudderless without a quarterback.

The USC Trojans appeared to be the choice for Kansas State transfer Will Howard. However, Miller Moss had an outstanding Holiday Bowl, leading the Trojans past the Louisville Cardinals with six touchdown passes. That caused Howard to look elsewhere, and he will now finish his collegiate career as an Ohio State Buckeye. USC is perilously thin at quarterback, and bringing in Kaidon Salter to compete with Moss would make a lot of sense.
