5. Continue to Dominate The Run
Texas has one of the best run defenses in the country. Iowa State's offensive line called out the Longhorns and they responded with another dominant performance. UT is now allowing only 2.9 yards per carry and they need to continue that against Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks. Brooks is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and has turned into a real workhorse for the Red Raiders.
1. Feed CJ Baxter
The Texas Longhorns enter the school's final regular season Big 12 contest as favorites over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. To keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive, the Longhorns need to continue to get freshman running back CJ Baxter into a rhythm. Baxter, taking over for the injured Jonathon Brooks, ran the ball 20 times for 117 yards. That's an average of 5.9 yards per carry for Baxter. He also had five receptions for 13 yards. Texas needs Baxter to turn into a bell cow back in short order.
2. Can Quinn Ewers Run?
Quinn Ewers getting back to playing like one of the nation's better quarterbacks is a key part to Texas winning the Big 12 and having a shot to make the College Football Playoff. Ewers has been fine since coming back from injury but he's playing cautious. He was sacked four times by Iowa State and had an intentional grounding penalty for a throwaway when he could have escaped. Ewers needs to get back to playing with some aggression and running the ball for Texas to reach its ceiling.
3. Stay Focused
The game against Texas Tech is in Austin and that should help but there will be a lot of emotions surrounding this game against an in-state conference foe. This is the Longhorns final Big 12 regular season game and it will be Senior Day. Texas has shown an improved maturity and culture this season but they'll need to find that focus one more time to beat the Red Raiders.
4. Pressure the QB
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are riding a three-game winning streak after beating UCF 24-23. Behren Morton has taken over at quarterback for the Red Raiders and Texas Tech is allowing sacks on 4.79% of drop backs. Texas has an terrific defensive front and pressuring the inexperienced Morton could spell doom for Texas Tech's chances.
