How Washington Can Beat Oregon: 5 Keys To Victory

5. Win On Third Down
The Oregon Ducks have one of the nation's best offenses. They showed a willingness and ability to go on extended drives against Oregon State and the Ducks are third in the country in third down conversion percentage. Oregon converts 52.76% of third downs. The Washington defense will have to cut that number significantly and get their own offense on the field.
1. Protect Michael Penix
The first matchup between these two teams saw Michael Penix Jr. throw for 302 yards on 22 of 37 passing with four touchdowns. Oregon was unable to get consistent pressure on Penix and picked their secondary apart. The Huskies allowed only one sack to Oregon. They'll need a similar performance again in the PAC-12 Championship Game.
2. Feed Rome Odunze
Star wide receiver Rome Odunze has been one of the best weapons in the country all season and he was outstanding against Oregon in the first meeting. Odunze had 128 yards and two touchdowns and was a threat every time he was targeted. Penix Jr. needs to make sure Odunze is involved early and often against an improved Oregon secondary. Odunze will need to win his matchups.
3. Be Aggressive
Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks will be aggressive. That is certain based on every piece of history we have from Lanning as a head coach. Washington head coach Kalen Deboer showed his willingness to be aggressive as well, going for it on fourth down deep in his own territory with the Apple Cup and with UW's unbeaten season on the line. Washington will need to be aggressive and win on fourth down to get the victory.
4. Force Nix Into Mistakes
Perhaps no quarterback in the country is playing better than Bo Nix right now. The Oregon quarterback was outstanding in the first meeting of the season but he's gotten even better since. Washington's defense will not be able to consistently stop Oregon's offense so they'll need to grab a couple of possessions by forcing turnovers. Nix rarely makes mistakes so Washington will have to capitalize if he gives them a chance.
