Akshay Bhatia stood on the 18th green, nerves alight after witnessing Denny McCarthy drain a crucial putt. With victory on the line, Bhatia knew he had to follow suit. In that tense moment, he whispered to himself, “Let’s freaking go," summoning his mental strength as he lined up his putt.

His heart raced and hands shook, but he delivered. The ball rolled perfectly into the hole, and the gallery erupted. A fist pump sent Bhatia’s shoulder out of its socket temporarily, but that didn’t stop his celebration. He recalls how his caddy’s high-five added to the adrenaline rush despite the pain.

“I remember shuttling back to the tee, and my shoulder felt super loose. All the ligaments were stretched, and I didn’t know what would happen next. But I felt this calmness," he said.

While getting taped up, he heard the crowd roar. He couldn’t see McCarthy’s fate directly, but he sensed trouble. Once back at his ball, he counted the strokes and realized that McCarthy had found the water. Bhatia had an open path to victory.

“It was such a crazy situation. I’m obviously trying to win a golf tournament and felt this calmness," Bhatia remarked. “When I returned to my ball, I knew Denny was in trouble. I counted on my fingers and realized, ‘I just won the golf tournament.'"

Reflecting on McCarthy’s performance, Bhatia praised his opponent’s composure and determination. “Denny played so well all day. He’s one of the best players out there," Bhatia acknowledged. “But sometimes, one mistake can be pivotal."

That pivotal error was a bug on McCarthy’s ball, which distracted him enough to push his shot into the water. Despite the unfortunate break, Bhatia emphasized the importance of mental fortitude: “Backing off when something doesn’t feel right is crucial, even if it looks awkward."

Ultimately, the victory was a testament to Akshay Bhatia’s perseverance under pressure, maintaining his focus to clinch the title and prove he’s a rising star on the PGA Tour.
