Battle for Final No. 1 Seed Continues

Houston has now claimed the final No. 1 seed we near conference tournament play in the power conferences after Florida’s defeat to Georgia last week. It would take a slip-up or two from the Cougars to allow the Gators or Tennessee back into the discussion. At the same time, the other three top seeds remain cemented into place, barring any catastrophe. A good showing for Kelvin Sampson’s men to close out the regular season and at the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, and they will be headlining a region on Selection Sunday.

Dangerous Teams Floor the 8/9 Seed Line

The eight-seed and nine-seed lines feel as dangerous as ever this year, with a handful of teams boasting high ceilings and some disappointing performances that have damaged their resumés. Despite flirting with top-ten status in almost every predictive metric, Gonzaga hasn’t strung together the signature wins necessary to warrant anything higher than an eight-seed. The two-time defending champions UConn are a squad that no one-seed will want to find in the second round, while AAC-leading Memphis is 5-2 in Quad 1 this year with wins over Michigan State, Missouri, and Clemson. Don’t be surprised if we see at least one top seed go down in the first week this year.
