EL PASO, Texas — Micah Alejado threw for 303 yards and a touchdown, Titan Lacaden delivered a career-best performance and Hawaii held off a late UTEP rally for a 17-14 victory Saturday night at the Sun Bowl, giving the Rainbow Warriors their second consecutive road win.

Playing their first game since the death of legendary former coach June Jones, the Rainbow Warriors (3-6, 2-4 Mountain West) never trailed but needed two crucial third-down conversions from Alejado to Lacaden on their final possession to preserve the victory.

Lacaden finished with career highs of 11 receptions and 109 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. His 11 catches were the most by a Hawaii player this season.

Alejado completed 26 of 40 passes for 303 yards and a touchdown, recording his second consecutive 300-yard passing performance. Audric Harris added four receptions for 101 yards, while Cam Barfield led Hawaii's rushing attack with 64 yards.

Hawaii controlled much of the game, outgaining UTEP 424-288 and holding the ball for more than 36 minutes. The Rainbow Warriors also converted eight of 15 third-down opportunities while limiting the Miners to just two conversions in 10 attempts.

The Rainbow Warriors opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Alejado connected with Lacaden for a 20-yard touchdown pass, capping a five-play, 77-yard drive.

Hawaii extended its lead to 10-0 midway through the second quarter following an 18-play, 91-yard possession that consumed more than eight minutes. Sean Olvera-Harle finished the drive with a 20-yard field goal.

UTEP (1-8, 0-5) responded immediately, covering 65 yards in just three plays and 36 seconds. Carver Cheeks broke loose for a 22-yard run, Lamar Sperling followed with a 23-yard gain and then scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to cut Hawaii's lead to 10-7 with 6:25 remaining before halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Hawaii put together its most impressive possession of the night early in the fourth.

Starting at its own 2-yard line, Hawaii marched 98 yards in 12 plays, taking more than six minutes off the clock. Sitani Mikaele provided a key 23-yard run before scoring on a 6-yard touchdown carry on third-and-goal to extend the Rainbow Warriors' advantage to 17-7 with 10:08 remaining.

The Miners refused to go away.

Quarterback Raymond Moore III directed a seven-play, 79-yard touchdown drive that included a 36-yard completion to Cheeks. Moore capped the possession with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Judah Ezinwa, pulling UTEP within 17-14 with 6:57 left.

That would be the Miners' final offensive possession.

Hawaii took over and methodically moved down the field, with Lacaden delivering two of the biggest catches of the night. He hauled in a 6-yard reception on third-and-3 at the UTEP 39-yard line with approximately three minutes remaining, then caught another 6-yard pass on third-and-4 at the UTEP 29 with 2:10 left.

Those conversions allowed Hawaii to exhaust the remaining clock and secure the victory without giving UTEP another opportunity to tie or win the game.

Hawaii's defense also played a significant role, holding an opponent to a season-low 14 points. Elijah Palmer led the Rainbow Warriors with a career-high nine tackles and forced two fumbles. Hawaii has forced eight turnovers over its past three games.

Moore finished 9 of 18 passing for 109 yards and a touchdown for UTEP, while Sperling rushed for 63 yards and a score on 11 carries.

"We were really close tonight but ultimately made too many critical errors and missed too many opportunities down the stretch," UTEP coach Scotty Walden said. "There were a few plays that changed the game, whether it was penalties that extended drives or our inability to convert on third down and stay on the field offensively."

The victory marked Hawaii's fourth win in its past five meetings with UTEP. Saturday's matchup was the first between the programs in 22 years, dating to their days as Western Athletic Conference rivals, and their first as Mountain West opponents.

For Hawaii, the victory continued a turnaround following a difficult start to the season. After opening 1-6, the Rainbow Warriors have won consecutive road games and will return home for the first time in nearly a month.

Hawaii will host North Dakota State on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Hawaii time. UTEP will host Wyoming the same day.
