We've mapped out the entire 24-team bracket, but now it's your turn to debate the madness:
- THE FIRST-ROUND UPSET: Which unseeded road team—USC at Tennessee, Iowa at LSU, or Oregon at Ole Miss—is most likely to crash the party and advance to the Sweet 16?
- THE AUTO-BID ROBBERY: Should Boise State bump a three-loss SEC team like Florida out of the dance, or should the top 24 teams on the committee's board get in regardless of conference championships?

What a 24-Team College Football Playoff Field Would Look Like in 2026
Madness in December: What a 24-Team College Football Playoff Bracket Looks Like

The College Football Playoff selection committee unveiled its inaugural top 25 rankings for the 2026 season, and while the current 12-team format is already causing fistfights across the country, college football power brokers are already laying the groundwork for the inevitable: a 24-team mega-tournament.

Borrowing the battle-tested FCS playoff architecture, a 24-team bracket provides the ultimate postseason blueprint:
- The Top 8 Seeds: The eight highest-ranked teams secure a coveted First-Round Bye, resting up while the rest of the country beats each other to a pulp.
- Seeds 9 through 16: Earn On-Campus Hosting Rights in the First Round, bringing postseason December football to iconic collegiate cathedrals.
- Seeds 17 through 24: Hit the road as dangerous opening-round underdogs.
- The Auto-Bid Rule: Just like the 12-team model, the top five conference champions receive automatic bids. That means Boise State (7-1, No. 25)—as the highest-ranked Pac-12 leader—steals the No. 24 seed, officially bumping Florida (5-3, No. 24) to the first team out on the bubble.
Stacking the committee's Week 10 rankings into a 24-team bracket creates an unbelievable slate of high-stakes football:
No. 24 Seed: Boise State Broncos
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: Pac-12 (Projected Champion Auto-Bid)

• CFP Rank: No. 25

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Auto-Bid

• Opening Matchup: at No. 9 BYU (Winner plays No. 8 UCLA)

Spencer Danielson’s Broncos crash the field as the fifth highest-ranked conference champion. Ranked No. 25 in the CFP poll, Boise State exercises the auto-bid rule to grab the final ticket to the dance. With a dominant, physical rushing attack and timely secondary play, Boise State is built for tournament football.

Heading to Provo to renew their rivalry with BYU gives the Broncos an opportunity to play spoiler. Boise State has built its program identity on taking down power-conference giants, and they will embrace the underdog role at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
No. 23 Seed: Oregon Ducks
• Record: 5-3

• Conference: Big Ten (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 23

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 10 Ole Miss (Winner plays No. 7 Texas)

Dan Lanning’s Ducks are the most dangerous three-loss squad in the bracket. Armed with five-star talent across both lines and elite athletes at every skill position, Oregon's record reflects a gauntlet schedule rather than a lack of ability.

Traveling to Oxford to take on Ole Miss is appointment television. Oregon has the speed, depth, and aggressive defensive mindset to trade punches with the Rebels and crash the round of 16.
No. 22 Seed: Arizona Wildcats
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: Big 12 (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 22

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 11 Notre Dame (Winner plays No. 6 Kentucky)

Brent Brennan’s Wildcats bring an electric offensive show wherever they travel. Senior quarterback Noah Fifita operates the Air Raid with point-guard precision, distributing the ball quickly and testing defenses with rhythm passing.

Going from Tucson to freezing South Bend in December will test Arizona's resolve. To pull off the shocker against Notre Dame, Fifita will need to get the ball out on time and keep the Irish front four from pinning their ears back.
No. 21 Seed: South Carolina Gamecocks
• Record: 5-3

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 21

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 12 Ohio State (Winner plays No. 5 Alabama)

Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks bring chaos, emotion, and an aggressive front seven into postseason play. Holding three losses from SEC play, South Carolina has proven they can stand toe-to-toe with anyone in the country when their defensive line creates disruption.

Heading north to face Ohio State at the Horseshoe is a daunting task, but Beamer's team thrives when counted out. If the Gamecocks can generate early turnovers and block a kick, they can make things very uncomfortable for the Buckeyes.
No. 20 Seed: USC Trojans
• Record: 7-2

• Conference: Big Ten (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 20

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 13 Tennessee (Winner plays No. 4 Indiana)

Lincoln Riley’s Trojans bring big-time offensive talent into the tournament field. USC can score from anywhere on the field, utilizing dynamic perimeter playmakers and creative route combinations to stretch opposing defenses horizontally and vertically.

Heading into Knoxville to face Tennessee's pass rush is a massive challenge for USC's offensive line. But in a game that could turn into a 45-42 shootout, Riley’s play-calling makes the Trojans an underdog nobody wants to draw.
No. 19 Seed: Iowa Hawkeyes
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: Big Ten (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 19

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 14 LSU (Winner plays No. 3 Utah)

Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes are the team nobody wants to see on their schedule in single-elimination football. Iowa wins with elite special teams, field position, and a defense that rarely gives up explosive plays.

Walking into Death Valley at night is the ultimate road test in sports. If Iowa can turn the game into an ugly, slow-paced slugfest and capitalize on LSU turnovers, they are capable of silencing 100,000 fans in Baton Rouge.
No. 18 Seed: Missouri Tigers
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 18

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 15 Texas Tech (Winner plays No. 2 Georgia)

Eli Drinkwitz’s squad has battled through the SEC gauntlet with a balanced offensive attack and timely third-down defense. The Tigers know how to manufacture points in tight, fourth-quarter games and won't be intimidated by hostile road environments.

Traveling to Lubbock means stepping into a hostile environment against Texas Tech. Missouri will look to lean on its physical SEC lines to quiet the crowd, chew up clock, and steal a ticket to Athens.
No. 17 Seed: Houston Cougars
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: Big 12 (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 17

• Bracket Status: First-Round Road Underdog

• Opening Matchup: at No. 16 Wake Forest (Winner plays No. 1 Miami)

Willie Fritz has brought defensive toughness and disciplined execution to Houston. The Cougars have wrecked high-flying Big 12 offenses by generating edge pressure with four rushers and running the ball with authority between the tackles.

Heading to Winston-Salem presents a manageable road trip. If Houston’s defensive front can stay disciplined, hold their gaps, and disrupt Wake Forest's slow-mesh handoffs, the Cougars have the physical tools to pull off an opening-round road upset.
No. 16 Seed: Wake Forest Demon Deacons
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: ACC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 16

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 17 Houston

• Host Venue: Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium | Winston-Salem, NC

Wake Forest's 7-1 campaign is one of the premier player development stories of 2026. Running their signature slow-mesh read option to perfection, the Demon Deacons frustrate opposing linebackers, control time of possession, and limit high-variance mistakes.

Snagging the final home-field seed allows Wake Forest to host Houston in North Carolina. If the Demon Deacons can establish their steady tempo and keep Houston’s pass rush off-balance, an all-ACC second-round tilt against No. 1 Miami awaits.
No. 15 Seed: Texas Tech Red Raiders
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: Big 12 (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 15

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 18 Missouri

• Host Venue: Jones AT&T Stadium | Lubbock, TX

Joey McGuire has turned Lubbock into an absolute hornet's nest. At 7-1, the Red Raiders have played fast, aggressive, complementary football, leaning on a defense that forces turnovers and an offense that attacks every inch of the perimeter.

Hosting an old Big 12 foe in Missouri brings extra spice to round one. Jones AT&T Stadium will be wild, tortillas will be flying, and Texas Tech will have every opportunity to earn a shot at Georgia in the second round.
No. 14 Seed: LSU Tigers
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 14

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 19 Iowa

• Host Venue: Tiger Stadium | Baton Rouge, LA

Saturday night in Death Valley with the season on the line—there is nothing else like it in American sports. Sam Leavitt has played gutty football under center for LSU, overcoming injuries to key weapons like tight end Trey'Dez Green to keep the Tigers firmly in the championship conversation.

Drawing Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes sets up a contrast in identities: LSU's athletic, dynamic spread offense colliding with Iowa’s smashmouth, clock-killing trench warfare. Surviving the Baton Rouge noise will be a monumental task for the visitors.
No. 13 Seed: Tennessee Volunteers
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 13

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 20 USC

• Host Venue: Neyland Stadium | Knoxville, TN

Josh Heupel’s warp-speed vertical attack brings postseason football back to Rocky Top. The Volunteers have punished defenses with deep sideline shots and a violent defensive front that lives in opposing backfields. Earning the No. 13 seed keeps them on their home turf for round one.

Over 102,000 screaming fans rocking checkerboard orange will welcome Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans into SEC country. If Tennessee’s pass rush can disrupt USC’s rhythm, Neyland Stadium will be ready to tear down the goalposts.
No. 12 Seed: Ohio State Buckeyes
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: Big Ten (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 12

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 21 South Carolina

• Host Venue: Ohio Stadium | Columbus, OH

Ryan Day and the Buckeyes enter the tournament with a massive chip on their shoulder. Two regular-season stumbles kept them from an automatic bye, but Ohio State's raw talent is undeniable. Julian Sayin has delivered crisp, on-time strikes to a five-star receiving corps, and the defense remains loaded with future first-round draft picks.

December football at the Horseshoe is legendary. Welcoming Shane Beamer’s chaotic, emotional South Carolina squad to Columbus provides the Buckeyes a stage to assert their dominance and punch a ticket to Tuscaloosa for a rematch with Alabama.
No. 11 Seed: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: FBS Independent

• CFP Rank: No. 11

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 22 Arizona

• Host Venue: Notre Dame Stadium | South Bend, IN

Marcus Freeman has the Irish clicking on all cylinders behind the poise of quarterback CJ Carr. Outside of one hiccup, Notre Dame has taken care of business with a top-five pass defense and an offensive scheme that protects the ball and converts in high-leverage third-down situations.

Hosting Arizona in South Bend in December is the ultimate clash of styles and climates. Freeman’s physical, hard-hitting defense will look to embrace the freezing temperatures and put the clamps on Noah Fifita’s desert Air Raid.
No. 10 Seed: Ole Miss Rebels
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 10

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 23 Oregon

• Host Venue: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium | Oxford, MS

Pete Golding’s offensive machine in Oxford remains one of the most feared units in the country. The Rebels attack vertically with reckless abandon, snapping the ball every 18 seconds and putting defensive secondaries in constant stress. At No. 10, they bring playoff football straight to the Grove.

Welcoming Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks to Mississippi in late December sets up an explosive, high-octane tilt. With both programs boasting elite perimeter athletes and aggressive offensive philosophies, whoever scores 40 points first likely advances to face Texas.
No. 9 Seed: BYU Cougars
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: Big 12 (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 9

• Bracket Status: First-Round Campus Host

• Opening Matchup: vs. No. 24 Boise State

• Host Venue: LaVell Edwards Stadium | Provo, UT

Kalani Sitake has built a stone-cold winner in Provo. BYU’s defense has been an absolute brick wall, giving up very little on the ground and creating havoc on passing downs. Checking in at No. 9, the Cougars just missed out on a bye, but hosting an opening-round playoff game at altitude is one hell of a consolation prize.

The Cougars draw old rival Boise State in a dream matchup for Western football purists. LaVell Edwards Stadium will be deafening, freezing, and entirely hostile for any opponent trying to survive 60 minutes in Utah.
No. 8 Seed: UCLA Bruins
• Record: 8-0

• Conference: Big Ten (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 8

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 9 BYU vs. No. 24 Boise State

The undefeated UCLA Bruins are the undisputed surprise story of the 2026 college football season. Navigating a treacherous new Big Ten schedule without a single blemish, the Bruins snatched the eighth and final first-round bye, setting up a second-round December playoff showcase at the iconic Rose Bowl.

While some debate their strength of schedule compared to SEC powerhouses, UCLA's balance on offense and timely turnovers make them tough to dismiss. Awaiting the winner of the BYU-Boise State clash, the Bruins hold home-field advantage in Pasadena.
No. 7 Seed: Texas Longhorns
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 7

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 10 Ole Miss vs. No. 23 Oregon

Steve Sarkisian’s roster is stacked with top-to-bottom NFL draft talent, and the committee recognized the ceiling of this Texas team. Despite dropped games in conference play, the Longhorns' explosive downfield passing attack and game-wrecking defensive front earned them the No. 7 seed and the final at-large bye.

Skipping the opening round allows Texas to get healthy across both lines. Whether they face Pete Golding’s explosive Ole Miss offense or Dan Lanning’s hungry Oregon Ducks in Austin, the Longhorns have the perimeter playmakers to turn any game into a track meet.
No. 6 Seed: Kentucky Wildcats
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 6

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 11 Notre Dame vs. No. 22 Arizona

Will Stein has engineered one of the most remarkable campaigns in Lexington history. The 7-1 Wildcats have pulverized opponents at the point of attack, leaning on a defense that chokes out big plays and an efficient, physical ground game. The selection committee rewarded Kentucky's resume with a jaw-dropping No. 6 overall seed.

By locking down a first-round bye, Kentucky avoids opening-round chaos and waits on the winner of Notre Dame and Arizona. Kroger Field hosting a College Football Playoff second-round game will have the entire state buzzing.
No. 5 Seed: Alabama Crimson Tide
• Record: 6-2

• Conference: SEC (At-Large)

• CFP Rank: No. 5

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye (Top At-Large Seed)

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 12 Ohio State vs. No. 21 South Carolina

Even with two SEC battle scars on their resume, Kalen DeBoer's Crimson Tide checked in as the committee's highest-ranked at-large squad. Alabama's strength of schedule and sheer explosive firepower on the perimeter carried the day, giving them the No. 5 seed and the luxury of skipping the first-round campus gauntlet.

That bye is massive for a team that has absorbed weekly body blows in the SEC. A potential second-round rematch against South Carolina or a blue-blood heavyweight collision with Ohio State at Bryant-Denny Stadium would be absolute must-watch television.
No. 4 Seed: Indiana Hoosiers
• Record: 8-1

• Conference: Big Ten (Projected Champion)

• CFP Rank: No. 4

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 13 Tennessee vs. No. 20 USC

Curt Cignetti is doing it all over again. The defending national champions have silenced every single critic who wrote off their historic run as a fluke. Veteran quarterback Josh Hoover has operated the offense with poise, taking care of the football and letting Indiana’s fast front seven dictate terms. Grabbing the final top-four bye rewards Indiana’s grueling Big Ten slate.

Hoover and the Hoosiers get to kick back and watch two explosive, high-flying offenses in Tennessee and USC beat each other up in Knoxville. With Memorial Stadium rocking and playoff experience on their side, Indiana has all the ingredients to mount another deep run.
No. 3 Seed: Utah Utes
• Record: 8-0

• Conference: Big 12 (Projected Champion)

• CFP Rank: No. 3

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 14 LSU vs. No. 19 Iowa

Morgan Scalley’s team is an absolute bulldozer. The Utes have mauled their way through their Big 12 debut slate, playing vintage Utah football: controlling the line of scrimmage, bludgeoning defenders between the tackles, and playing violent, suffocating red-zone defense. Sitting at an unblemished 8-0, Utah captures the No. 3 seed and a well-earned week off.

Rice-Eccles Stadium at elevation in late December is arguably the single most hostile venue in the country. Awaiting the winner of a physical LSU-Iowa war, the Utes are perfectly constructed to drag any visitor into deep water and drown them in the fourth quarter.
No. 2 Seed: Georgia Bulldogs
• Record: 7-1

• Conference: SEC (Projected Champion)

• CFP Rank: No. 2

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 15 Texas Tech vs. No. 18 Missouri

Kirby Smart’s defense has rounded into championship form right when it matters most. After weathering early-season SEC road tests, the Bulldogs enter November holding the top spot in the conference and a stranglehold on the No. 2 seed. Georgia’s suffocating front seven remains the gold standard in college football, erasing opposing rushing attacks and forcing coordinators into predictable passing downs.

A first-round bye allows Georgia to nurse late-season bumps and bruises before welcoming either Texas Tech’s up-tempo air raid or Missouri’s smashmouth ground attack to Sanford Stadium. In December knockout football, bet against Smart’s defense at your own peril.
No. 1 Seed: Miami Hurricanes
• Record: 8-0

• Conference: ACC (Projected Champion)

• CFP Rank: No. 1

• Bracket Status: First-Round Bye (No. 1 Overall Seed)

• Projected Second-Round Matchup: Winner of No. 16 Wake Forest vs. No. 17 Houston

Mario Cristobal has the Hurricanes sitting on the throne of college football. Behind the surgical pocket play of Heisman frontrunner Darian Mensah and an offense scoring in bunches, Miami has run through the ACC schedule with authority. Earning the No. 1 overall seed provides the Hurricanes two full weeks of prep in Coral Gables while avoiding the opening-round meat grinder.

Whether they draw in-state rival Wake Forest's methodical slow-mesh or Houston's aggressive front seven, Miami's defensive line gives them a massive trench advantage. For a program hunting its first national title in a quarter-century, the road to the championship runs straight through South Florida.
