5 Things We Learned About the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl

The Chiefs Aren't a Dynasty
Rome wasn't built in a day. The Romans took years of victories to establish themselves as a dynasty. That's the common thread that you can follow through history. However, it's also a characteristic that we saw escape the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

Kansas City looked like a shell of its former self. In a vacuum, it's an unfortunate ending. But when we follow the string further back, the dynasty sweater starts to unravel. The Chiefs have constantly benefitted from team-friendly calls from officials, on which several of their victories depended. When those calls started to evaporate, meaningful gains failed to materialize.

Defeat isn't the hallmark of a dynasty, and the Chiefs are starting to have more losses than wins in the playoffs. The loss in Super Bowl LIX doesn't close the book on Kansas City potentially becoming a dynasty, but it does leave fewer chapters for them to try to rewrite their ending.

The 2024 NFL season came to a not-so-exciting conclusion on Sunday. The Kansas City Chiefs were dealt a humbling defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles. With that came some valuable lessons that the Chiefs can't ignore heading into next season.

The most pressing issue is the Chiefs' non-existent run game. Kansas City managed just 49 rushing yards against the Eagles, with none of their three running backs looking capable of getting downfield. Patrick Mahomes was the most effective runner, but his 25 yards on four carries shouldn't be a team-high.

This isn't a problem that started in the Super Bowl, but the stunning loss certainly shone a spotlight on the concern. If the Chiefs hope to recapture their former glory next season, they need to get real about their run game.
Woeful Offensive Line
KC's poor run game is likely a symptom of a more concerning issue. The Chiefs need to shore up their offensive line.

Mahomes was under duress all game. The Eagles got to the Chiefs quarterback on six occasions, and that's not including the constant pressure he felt in the pocket all night long. Kansas City's offensive line was constantly under attack, and as we've seen at different points this season, they were unable to withstand the pressure.

The Chiefs haven't prioritized offensive linemen in the draft for many years, and it shows. Whether it's in the draft or free agency, KC's brass needs to address this problem in the offseason.

It took him some time to get going, but by the end of the year, we saw how unstoppable Xavier Worthy is.

The first-round draft pick cashed a bunch of props in Super Bowl LIX. He ended the game as the leading receiver, posting the longest reception and recording two touchdowns. More importantly, he showed his breakaway speed and pass-catching abilities, which weren't evident earlier in the campaign.

Worthy is a breakout candidate next season. Keep him in mind for fantasy season, and watch him and Rashee Rice reinvigorate the Chiefs' passing attack.

Patrick Mahomes is Human
While he's earned a laundry list of accolades and helped build one of the most distinguished teams in the NFL, Super Bowl LIX revealed a more compelling truth about Patrick Mahomes. He's human, just like the rest of us.

Mahomes was entirely out of his element on Sunday night. The constant pressure he felt excuses some of the performance issues, but a few red flags still arose throughout the performance. Specifically, Mahomes couldn't complete a pass, especially in the first half. He missed several throws and looked out of sync with his receivers.

This performance doesn't define Mahomes as a football player. But it does reveal that he's not as infallible as many thought.
