The group stage is over and the knockout round of the men’s soccer tournament is here. Two of the pre-tournament favorites are facing off against each other in the quarterfinals as France takes on Argentina.
France is one of two teams to have won every single one of their games. They started off strong with a 3-0 win over the United States and kept the ball rolling with victories over Guinea and New Zealand. Les Bleus have looked extremely convincing, scoring seven and not conceding a goal yet. Manager Thierry Henry has his squad playing good soccer, giving the home crowd a lot to get behind.
Argentina’s road to the knockouts featured a bit more of a winding road. Their tournament started off with a very chaotic 2-1 loss against Morocco. The game featured 15 minutes of added time, play being suspended for over an hour and a goal overturned by VAR once play restarted. After that, they bounced back nicely beating Ukraine and Iraq easily. securing the second spot in their group.
Argentina is riding high after their Copa America victory; however, the biggest name from that squad Julian Alvarez hasn’t found the back of the net. Nicolas Otamendi has been shoring up the backline and using his experience to keep them in the games. Thiago Almada has been one of the shining stars for La Albiceleste thus far scoring in their last two matches.
Despite not logging a ton of minutes together this France squad has a lot of players capable of magic moments. Alexandre Lacazette, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Michael Olise have all shown their quality and are impacting the game at a very high level. Their defending has been top-notch, and their young goalkeeper Guillaume Restes has stepped making Les Bleus almost impossible to score on.
Men’s Olympic Soccer Quarterfinals Argentina vs. France Best Bet
Argentina has some experience and a few winners at a high level, but it has not translated to the pitch at these Olympics. Meanwhile, the French have an extremely deep squad and are performing at a high level. With the home crowd on their side, and all the star names in their squad it is hard to bet against France to get some revenge for their World Cup final loss to Argentina.
Best Bet: France to win in 90 (+105)
Men’s Olympic Soccer Quarterfinals Argentina vs. France Best Prop Bet
This bet goes hand-in-hand with the one above it. I’ve talked about above the French defense has been one of the best in the tournament. I’m banking on that trend to continue. Argentina has not looked the most fluid, and while they’ve put the ball in the back of the net against weaker opposition this will be a real test that I don’t believe they’ll be able to pass.
Best Prop: Both Teams To Score No (-106)
Men’s Olympic Soccer Quarterfinals Argentina vs. France Prediction
Both teams have talent and are able to make things happen. My prediction is largely predicated on form. While both teams can call on some star names not only does France have more in their squad but they have been performing thus far in Paris. With Alvarez not being able to find the back of the net a lot will fall on the shoulders of Almada and he will find it harder against the French. Meanwhile not only have Les Bleus been playing well but their attack is led by experienced players who will not falter under pressure. The party will continue in Paris as France gets closer to the podium.
France 2 – Argentina 0
