The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris aren’t officially underway until July 26, but the Men’s Rugby 7s tournament has already begun. Twelve teams are mauling their way to a spot in the knock-out round, with several berths already guaranteed. Still, there’s plenty up for grabs as the two best bottom-six teams can assure themselves a spot in the quarterfinals.
The United States has the inside track for the seventh seed, tying the host nation France in Group Play action. A win over Uruguay on Friday guarantees the Red, White, and Blue finish seventh. We predict they’ll be joined by the eighth-seeded South Africa Springboks, who should have no problem escaping their matchup versus Japan.
However, that’s the best either nation can hope for as they take on Rugby royalty in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The United States will likely face Argentina, with South Africa facing New Zealand. The other quarterfinals should feature Australia versus France and Fiji versus Ireland. Australia is primed for an upset over host France, with the other three expected favorites moving on.
That would set up showdowns between New Zealand and France in one semifinal matchup, with Fiji taking on Argentina in the other. The French and Argentinians will likely enter those contests as favorites, but both dogs are live and expected to pull off unexpected upsets.
Although Fiji has emerged as a Rugby 7s powerhouse, the All Blacks will emerge as the gold medallists in Saturday’s Gold Medal match.
