Emil Forsberg’s quick-fire brace and Andres Reyes’ second-half goal secured a 3-1 victory for the New York Red Bulls over Charlotte FC on Wednesday night, following a lengthy weather delay.
New York (7-3-5) extended their home unbeaten streak to nine matches across all competitions. The Red Bulls have now gone unbeaten in their first six home matches of the season, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2012.
Charlotte (6-6-4) entered the match on the back of five consecutive clean sheets, with three wins and two draws, including their first away victory of the season.
Forsberg broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with a sublime free-kick, marking the first goal Charlotte had conceded since April 27. Just two minutes later, Forsberg found himself unmarked at the penalty spot, finishing off a pinpoint pass from Lewis Morgan on a breakaway.
Reyes added a third goal in the 83rd minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in front of the net following a corner kick.
Despite Ben Bender’s stoppage-time goal for Charlotte, their scoring struggles continued, with only 14 goals in 16 matches this season.
The Red Bulls’ impressive defensive record and Forsberg’s clinical finishing were key to their victory. Charlotte, despite their recent defensive solidity, couldn’t contain New York’s attacking prowess.
New York’s home form has been exceptional this season, and their ability to remain unbeaten at Red Bull Arena has been a significant factor in their successful campaign so far. The combination of solid defense and timely goals has kept them in contention.
Charlotte, on the other hand, will need to address their offensive issues if they hope to climb the standings. Their inability to convert chances into goals has hampered their progress, and Bender’s late goal, while a consolation, highlighted the ongoing struggle.
The Red Bulls will look to maintain their momentum as the season progresses, while Charlotte must regroup and find a way to break their scoring drought. The match showcased the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, with New York’s resilience and Charlotte’s defensive efforts both on display.
