SAN DIEGO — From two down to 2-2, Cédric Bakambu's brace lifts San Diego FC to the Saturday night draw against the Seattle Sounders at Snapdragon Stadium.

Only four regular season matches remained coming into the weekend game for the Chrome & Azul, with playoff hopes in need of a collection of points, trailing the final Western Conference wild card spot by five points.

After last Saturday’s 2-2 finish at Dignity Health Sports Park against SoCal rival LA Galaxy, SDFC were back at home for their second-to-last home match of the 2026 season.

Points have been hard to come by for SDFC, having gone their last eight matches winless, gathering four out of a possible 24 points.

Both of these sides were in search of the series victory, with their first meeting of the season ending in a 1-1 stalemate back at Lumen Field on May 9.

This Saturday night, the first half finished cagey and scoreless, with SDFC and the Sounders unable to test the two goalkeepers throughout the first 45-minutes.

SDFC were the more offensively advanced side through the first half, dominating ball possession in their attacking half as the visiting Sounders looked content in a compact setup transitioning into quick attacks off turnovers.

The biggest chance of the half belonged to SDFC’s Anders Dreyer, nearly finding the net at the 29-minute mark, with his outside-the-box shot blasting off the bottom right woodwork to keep the match scoreless.

The Sounders got off to a great start to the second half, scoring twice within ten minutes of the restarting whistle.

Sounders forward Dejan Joveljic opened up the game's scoring in the 50-minute, letting off an unstoppable left-footed outside-the-box shot that looped around SDFC goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega and into the left side of the goal for the 1-0 score.

Only five minutes later, midfielder Sebastian Gomez doubled up Seattle’s lead with a finishing touch inside the goal area.

SDFC quickly answered back with an attack of their own, as forward Amahl Pellegrino was able to win a penalty attempt for his side in the 59-minute following a quick VAR decision by referee Allen Chapman.

Seattle nearly kept the match at 2-0 after goalkeeper Andrew Thomas denied Anders Dreyer from the penalty spot, but it was forward Cédric Bakambu first to the ensuing loose ball, only needing the tapping touch into the empty net to cut the SDFC deficit to one.

The 60-minute score marked Bakambu’s fourth goal for the Chrome & Azul.

SDFC finally found their equalizer after a near 40-minute period of offensive control and pressure, with the scoring chance coming off the back of another awarded penalty, this time won by forward Marcus Ingvartsen.

For his brace, Cédric Bakambu converted from the spot in the 90+6-minute as he sent Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas the wrong way for the 2-2 score.

Goal number five for Bakambu on the season, netting his second goal from the penalty spot for the Chrome & Azul.

The full-time whistle shortly blew at that 2-2 scoreline, with the season series ending in two draws between San Diego and Seattle.

Despite avoiding a loss, SDFC’s winless streak looms at nine straight matches, ending the matchday five points behind the final Western Conference wild card spot with only three matches remaining.

At the post-match press conference, SDFC head coach Mikey Varas addressed his team’s disappointment following the 2-2 draw against Seattle, while stressing his squad’s mentality in their playoff push.

“I know that we all feel the sting of the result. We should. We're all really disappointed, but we play in four days. And we need to get our minds, body and spirit right because we got to go there for three points and there's no alternative.”

“It shows that we're going to fight this thing to the last inch, until the last second. I can promise you that.”

SDFC are on the road for their next two matchdays, with the Vancouver Whitecaps first on the remaining fixtures list as the Chrome & Azul visit BC Place on Wednesday night, Oct. 28. All set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The earlier season meeting belonged to Vancouver, ending with the visiting Whitecaps snatching a 4-2 victory at Snapdragon Stadium back on May 23.
