5. Win the Line of Scrimmage
A big reason for the Texas Longhorns resurgence this season has been the play of the offensive and defensive lines. They were the more physical team in their win over Alabama earlier this season and that has continued most weeks. The Texas Tech Red Raiders have to find a way to beat Texas upfront to give themselves a chance.
1. Pound the Rock
The Texas Longhorns have one of the nation's best run defenses, allowing only 2.9 yards per rush to the opposition. Texas Tech has leaned heavily on running back Tahj Brooks in recent weeks and he responded with monster performances. Brooks has at least 98 yards in every game since the week two loss to Oregon and he has rushed for more than 140 yards on five occasions. The senior back is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and it will take a Herculean effort from Brooks on Friday night.
2. Hit Explosive Plays
Teams have rarely been able to sustain long drives against this Texas defense. The Red Raiders lack the offensive ability to do that and they'll need to hit explosive plays to score. Leading receiver Xavier White averages 15 yards per catch and the Red Raiders would greatly benefit from a couple of explosive scoring plays.
3. Exploit the Emotions
The matchup between Texas and Texas Tech will be the final regular season Big 12 game for the Longhorns before they depart for the SEC. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire needs to take advantage of what should be an emotional Senior Day in Austin.
4. Pressure Quinn Ewers
Quinn Ewers has been fine since returning from injury but he has displayed some caution in using his legs. Ewers was sacked four times by Iowa State last time out and was also assessed an intentional grounding penalty on a play he could have escaped the pocket. Texas Tech only averages 1.5 sacks per game but they will need a few more than that to pull off the upset.
